Success Is
To Search
Though Caesar may swear it's
Cleopatra, I'm convinced that
Success is the most elusive female
anywhere around. And I should
know, 'cause I've been searching
for her since the day I entered the
University, six years ago.
Granted, there's a wealth of in
formation on how to meet her. In
all the bookstores, her name is
prominent on the latest editions.
I've read so much about her that
my head just swims.
Talk about being famous! Why,
Success has every red-blooded
American male hankering to share
her company. Even Frank Sinatra
would like to be "Mr. Success." In
the Big City, her name is worthy

I'm getting mighty heartsick
over Success 'cause I sure would
like to court her. Somehow, my
professors don't seem to have
much confidence in my ability to
locate her.
Wonder if the Missing Persons
Bureau could give me a hand ?
I don't know if I could give them
much to go on, though. Women
are such a fickle bunch.
Guess I just need a source of
inspiration. Think I'll ask the li
brarian if she knows a way that I
can win Success.

Money
The monetary renumeration of
such a musical venture can vary
immensely. Some part-time musi
cians start off as low as seven or
eight dollars for a four-hour job.
But many four or five-piece local
groups make well over $100 for
high school junior-seniors frater
nity parties, and other special
events.
The set-up which many of the
combos work toward is steady

work in a particular club. There
are several groups now playing
regularly at Columbia clubs.
The work which goes into form
ing a combo is not as hard as it
may sound if the participants have
at- least an elementary knowledge
of their instruments. The type of
music which is now in demand is
not particularly hard to play.
Rhythm an' Blues
Basically, it consists of varia
tions of a three- four-, or
sometimes five-chord pattern. Con
trary to popular opinion, most
combos play rhythm an' blues.
rather than pure rock an' roll.
In addition to the usual rhy
thin an' blues groups, there are
several good jazz groups around
the University. However, since
jazz is not very danceable, they
usually have more trouble getting
work.
ProbalV the business end of
music is actually as time-consum
ing as the actual practice. Espe
cially in the beginning, someone
has to make the rounds of clubs,
fraternities, high schools, and
other places of possible employ
ment to find jobs. No one will
come looking for a new combo.
Publicity
Publicity is a very important
asl)ect of a new group. The more
the name of the group and the
group itself are before the public,
the better the chances for it to
survive. This often results in play
ing some jobs for little or no
mfoney and much free publicity.
