1961: YEAR OF DECISION
Well sir, here we are in 1961, which shows every sign of being
quite a distinguished year. First off, it is the only year since
1951 which begins and ends with the Figure 1. Of course, whenl
it comes to Figure l's, 1961, though distinguished, can hardly
compare with 1911, which, most people agree, had not just two,
but three Figure l'sI This, I'll wager, is a record that will stand
for at least two hundred years!
1911 was, incidentally, notable for many other things. It
was, for example, the year in which the New York (iants played
the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. As we all know,
the New York Giants have since moved to San Francisco and
the Philadelphia Athletics to Kansas City. There is a movement
afoot at p)resent to move Chicago to Phoenix-the city, not the
baseball team. Phoenix, in turn, would of course move to
Chicago. It is felt that thte change would be broadening for
residlents of both cities. Many Chicago folks, for exampJle, have
never seen an iguana. Many Phoenix folks, on the other hand,
have never seen a frost bite.
There are, of course, certain dlifficulties attending a municipal
shift of this size. For instance, to miove Chicago you also have
to move Lake Michigan. This, in itself, presents no great p)rob
1em, what with miodlern scientific adlvances like electronics anid
the French cuff. But if you will look at y'our map, you will find
that Lake Michigan is coninectedl to all the other G reat I .ukes,
which in turn are connewcted to the St. Lawrence Seaw%ay, which
in turn is connected to the Atlantic Ocean. You start dlragging
Lake Michiiganu to Phoenix and, willy-nilly, you'll be dIragging
all that other stuff too. Tis would make our British allies
terrib)ly cross, and I can't say as I blame them. I mean, p)ut
yourself in their place. What if, for example, you were a British
workingman who had been saving and scrimping all year for a
sumimer holiday at Brighton Bleach, and then when yotu got to
Brighton Beach there WOcann't any~ OCan '1 There you'd be with your
inner ltube andI snorkel and nothing to do all (lay but (dance the
Lambheth Walk. T1his, you mauy be sure, would not tmake you
NATO--minded!
I appleal imost earnestly to the residents of Chicago and
Phoenix to reco,nsidecr. I know it's no bowl of cherries going
through life without ever seeing an iguana or a frost bite, bitt I
ask you -C hicagoans, 1PhIoenicians - is it too big a price to pay
for preserving the unity of the free world? I ant sure that if
you search your hearts you will imake the right decision, for
all of us-whether we live in frostbitten Ciceago, igujanai-ridlden
Phoentix, or narrow-lapelled New I laven -are first and foremost
Amuericans!i
But I digress. We were speaking of 1961, our new year. And
new it is! '[here is, for one thing, new p)leasuire in Marlboro
Cigarettes. How can there be new pleasutre in Marlboros when
that fine, flavorful blend, that cleani easy (draw filter, have not
been altered? The answer is simple: each time you light a

What makes the difference in
what a permanent does, and in how
well it does it, is customizing -
fitting the process to the hair and
the results wanted.
Customizing is done in many
ways. Its tightness or looseness
can vary, depending on three fac
tors; the strength of the solution
used, the size of the rollers used
(they come in sizes from small to
jumbo) and the length of time the
solution is left on the hair. All of
these factors can be changed for
the permanent wanted.
A body permanent will use large
rollers and a short processing time,
because the idea is to add body to
the hair, to give the hair founda- h
tion for set curl, to add fullness 0
or a lift where needed, but without (I
adding curls. t)
Other factors also enter into the t
final results. How the hair grows 9
is an important one. On most '
heads, the hair at the front has
the most curl and the hair at the
nape has least. Therefore, most v
