What is Christmas anyway?
The Word: After Jesus Christ
departed from them a common
meal was a daily occurrence with
his followers. Included in it were
the s i g n s which he had sug
gested, signs of his death, bread
and wine. This daily memorial
proved too taxing and gradually
the communion meal became a
special occasion for Sundays and
the high days of the year. "Mass"
was the name given and the one
for the birthday of Jesus became
"Christ's Mass," the annual re
minder of the meaning of his
birth and life.

About Chr

bothered to remember what day,
of the year Jesus was born. So
that all could celebrate the same1

and was the day for four hun

churches. In every country there
was a festival on the day of the
winter solstice (December 25 be
fore the calendar was revised).
The two had a way of overlap
ping and in the fifth century it
was decided to combine them.
Certainly it was good symbolism
-the return of the sun, of light
to a darkened world and the com
ing of Jesus Christ, the light of
the world.
The Year: Since the birth of
Jesus Christ marked a new era
for mankind all h i s t o r y was
dated from that event-from the
"year of the Lord," A.D., or be
fore Christ, B.C. However when
the monk worked out this scheme
in the fifth century, his informa
tion was incomplete and he un
fortunately miscalculated by five
years. A.D. 1 is the 754th year of
Rome. Jesus Christ was born in
the 749th year of Rome or B.C.
5. Christmas 1960 is the 196th
Christmas.
