The regular meeting of Student Council was called to order
by President Mike Quinn. The roll was called and the min
utes approved as read.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Mike Adair presented the following report of the Fire In
vestigating Committee:
At the recommendation of Council the committee inter
viewed certain faculty and administrative heads in the hopes
of acquiring suggestions for improving fire safety condi
tions on campus. This list includes Dean Tomlin, Chief
Bundrick, Mr. Barnes, Dean Clotworthy and Fire Chief
Marsh.
The status of fire safety on campus according to Mr.
Barnes is as follows:
The fraternity Quadrangle, Buildings H1 an(d J, Wade
Hampton, Sims, McCliintock aid Preston are of ficially termed
fireproof. This status includes the building only and not the
furniture and )ersonal possessions within.
The tenements and Maxey are of woodlen interior construc
tion and therefore constitute a hazar(d. These buildings to
gether with the fireproof ones are protected by automatic
individual srinkler systems.
Setting off one of these sprinklers triggers an alarm at
the fire headquarters in downtown Columbia.
The maintenance de)artment. in cool)eration with housing
are responsible to see that all precautions are taken to clear
hallways and rooms of unnecessary combustibles.
The fire extinguisher and other safety devices are
periodically inspected to assure every possible safety to stu
dents.
The University is fortunate in having an alert and highly
capable fire department located within a mile of campus. It
has been brought to the attention of the committee that our
close relations with this agency have been nearly severed by
an unfortunate violation of courtesy iml)osed upon the fire
men while performing their duty by university students. A
resolution will be presented later to Council with the hope of
menlding these relations.
The suggestions discussed are are follows:
A. Fire drill possibility: All campus heads interviewed,
with the exception of Dean Clotworthy, agreed that the idea
of organizing fire drills is highly impractical. They felt that:
(1) All male students couldi never be grouped satisfactorily
anl (2) the attempt at an organized fire drill wouldl not be
regarded seriously by students. Dean Clotworthy favored the
drills for girls and further action will he taken through her
office.
n. The circulation of precautionary literature: The inter
viewed parties agreed unanimously that the ptublication of
an instruction sheet through proper channels could instill
wvithin students an awvareness of the dangers involved and
present to them suitable instructions to folloV in a fire
crisis.
Jimmy Truesdale gave a progress report on the Commit
tee on Student Workers' Meal Tickets. The )url)Ose of the
committee is to )ropose a fair method for Slater System stu
dent workers to exchange their ninety-cent meal tickets for
cash. One of the committee's proposal is that Student Union
Committee appoint an authorized person to buy the tickets
from the studlent workers at seventY-five or eighty cents and
then to sell them to interested persons.
Larry Barringer p)resentedI the following report:
The list of student body officers, representatives and class
officers was obtained from the se cretary, Vasiliki Moskos.
The University Press p)rinted the list for $11.75 and the

Monday is showdown night for the
University of South Carolina fresh

as they collide in the Block "C"
Club's first annual varsity-freshman
game.
Varsity coach Bob Stevens has
been pleased with the progress of
his Gamecocks and is looking to this
game for an indication of just how
far his team has come along.
This game should serve some in
dication of just how well the varsity
will fare this season with its ap

has only one man over 6-4 - Dave
Prevoznik, a (-6 sophomore. The
reslhmen, on the other hand, have
several men who top the 6-4 mark,

Thomas Caughman, 6-6, and Al
