Place to hang caipaign posters.
Prior to the construction of the
w4a1l, many male students found
railing the local "henhouse" an
exciting extri-curricular activity.
As soon as this was discovered, a
howl of indignation arose for some
protective action to insure the
safety of the coeds in jeopardy.
High Brick Wall
To meet this rising tide of ex
tra-curricular activity, the presi
dent suggested that a high brick
wall be built around the campus,
as a means of keeping students in
their rooms and on campus, but
such a wall was not immediately
constructed.
Clemson Assault
One year, the wall served as i
means of protection from irate
Clemson supporters. A f t e r the
initial game of the USC-Clemson
affair had been won by Carolina,
the Clemson boys displayed their
usual attitude after losing a conl
test and assaulted the Carolina
students with pistols, knives, and
clubs.
The leader of the Carolina stu
dents promptly ordered up the de
fense of Carolina behind the pro
tection of the wall. It appeared
that an onslaught would occur at
any moment. but due to some fast
talking by a few people, a major
battle was averted. Soon after, the
possession of firearms was strictly
prohibited at USC.
Steel Fence
Last spring a wall of steel was
constructed about the women's
dormitories as a protective meas
ure against the still lively spirits
ol the Carolina iale populat ion.
I'erhaps the steel wall will remain i
standing as long as the brick wall:
has remained, and perhaps it will
contain the spirits of the women
on this campus as Well as the old
brick wall has quieted the spirits
of the male population.
