Cock Tales.
. . . With Gray
As we look down the remaining list of opponents th
Gamecocks will face this season, we feel that the toug
ones haven't been niet. Maryland, Virginia, and Clemso
are using a lot of sophomores that will improve as the week
roll by. The Terps haven't shown a lot of promise as of ye
but with DAle letty and Dick Novak as versatile fiel
generals, they could )LIt the "I" offense in high gear.
The Cavaliers scared the Bashful Baron last week i
Death Valley. With a little more time, they could becom
q-alified to compete in the tough ACC. Clemson, a ball cut
hat is dc!'mitely :ver-rated. is using a number of soph
Ihat should blossom ducing the last half of the campaign.
Carolina will take on powerful Miami tonight. The Hlurr
canties have a backfield that can move the ball well and
line that is well-seasoned. The official odd(s at this writin
(Tuesday) places Miami a two-touchdown favorite, but w
think our Gamecocks are better than that, which is cor
trary to tii thinking of manY of the so-called "loyal
Carolina supporters.
North Carolina fell to N. C. State and Miami, but don'
sell -Jim Hickey's eleven short. The Tar Heels are also in
proving as the season moves into the last half. L. S. U. los
its great halfback Billy Cannon and other standouts throug
graduation, but a team that occupies the number one spo
in the country for the length of time the Bengals (lid shoul
be watched carefully and prepared for as Sich.
North Carolina State, a big surprise so far, has knocke
off its first four opponents. Earle Edwards has a good ba
club. according to its 4-0 record, but again we feel tha
the Birds can take 'em. Wake Forest and Norman Snead go
off to a bad start, and have been a big disap)ointment in th
ACC. Billy IHildebrand has good material that has the poten
t ial and they are bound to get rolling soon.
Even though we do feel the tougher teams haven't beet
faced, we are iot dropping out of the Optimist Club, as on
of the local newspaper sportswriter suggests. In fact. thi
column is looking for new members.

Today the freshman Biddies go
after their first win of the season
when they play the Wake Forest
freshman team at 2:00 o'clock
this afternoon in Winston-Salem,
North Carolina.
The Biddies were defeated in
a their f i r s t game at Carolina
S Stadium by the Maryland Baby
' Terps 21-6.
I The Wake Forest frosh lost
their first game with Clemson
.16-6 but it is pointed out that
e the I)eacons have "speed in the
b backfield, with good passing.
S They can be expected to use a
split-end offense just like the
varsity, and will be tough to
F defend against." It is hardly
possible that they have found a
e quarterback to equal the var
sitv's Norman Snead, however.
The Biddies, practicing hard to
correct their last game's mistakes,
t hope to repeat last year's win of
18-G over the baby Deacs.
t Starting at the end positions

t are Billy Nies and Fred Neal; at

The forward wall, averaging
!09 pounds, should not find the
zoing too tough although the
Biaby Deaes have plenty in the
ront line, too.
The backfield should be able
to get the ball rolling offen
sively pretty well if the line is
blocking as they should and the
backfield is as speedy as pre
dicted.

It has come to our attention
that the Clemson newspaper, "The
Tiger," has been, for the past sev
eral weeks, running a series of
articles on their so-called sports
page entitled "The Spy Ring."
This column, which is to be run
until the Clemson-Carolina game
November 12, is written by a
group of anonymous ex-Tigers
who have transferred to our fair
campus this year for a number of
reasons-law school, grad school,
and a small group of farmers who
decided they wanted to see what
living was like.
Their names will be kept secret
until after the now defunct "Big
Thursday" clash, at which time
they will be published in "The
Tiger." Just I i k e an immature
Clemson man-keeping secrets!
In short, the whole fiasco is a
slam at Carolina's school spirit,
