A look reminiscent of the '20's
pervades fall fashions this year.
The dress with the softly bloused
bodice and the lowered waistline is
-:eel everywhere, shades of John
1.e'd!
A dding to tihe '20's look are the
hair styles, hats and make-up seen
this fall. Especially reminiscent
o.f the ".Jazz Age" is the e ye make

"Tlhe Swan" and "The Owl." Eye
',hadow is frequently taken up to
the eyebrow and can only be de
s"ribed as ghoulish.
Like the suit silhouette the dress
silhouette this fall is eased and
softened. Trho new dress shape
slips easily into and out of the
dram at ic fall coats.
Dress Silhouette
The dIress silhouette is eased by
heuse of tucks, gathers and, of
courSe, t)leats. The slim sheath is
seldom seen this full; it has been
sulpplantedl by the ''slim'' (1ress
w~~it gathered or tucked skirt.
The princhess (1ress ij hack again,

Tne p nger tOrso and)( lowered waist
line ottern oanded are also seen in
the 'slim'' dresses.
Sleeves are often non-existent,
eveni in tweedlS and plaids. If
pre4sent, sleeves ate elbow length or
three-quariters; with extra width to
gZive a be.ll :haped effect.
Knit D)resses
Tfhe jewel necklitne is omni
present anod takes kindly to multi
strands of hid beads and big
jeweled pins.
Like everything else knit dresses
are to lbe seen everywhere. These
"swveate(r" dIresses often have turtle
necks and are belted wvith thin

life and the dress life. The jackets
are usually of the longer variety
and often are semi-fitted.
Fabrics and Colors
The little nothing dress has
moved into evening in elegant,
stiffish fabrics that hold their own
shape. These dresses have all the
manner of the daytime dress,
gathered or tucked skirt, lowered
waistline and thin string belt.
Jersey and knit fabrics have a
definite fashion advantage this
year. Other fabrics - brushy
wools, tweeds and plaids.
As in all other clothes the
purpley colors dominate the fashion
field. The rusty and raisin browns,
the muted shades of green and all
shades of red are also popular.
Dress Accents
To wear with the little fall
dresses - strands and strands of
big beads longer than in years past
are nice wvith the jewel necklines.
Big jeweledl pins in twvos and
threes are good wvith most neck
lines.
The hats that take most easily
to the fall hair styles and dress are
the little felt helmets, also good for

Fall Coats
I ots and lots of r.oom is the
starting point for coats this fall.
Hut not tent coverings these ---
whether swirling bias, rounded
fullness or straight lined, they are
flat and smooth in front with the
fullness falling cloak-like to the
back.
For those who prefer petite
styling, there is the semi-fitted
princess live, shaped back and
front. The alternate for anyone
is the absolutely straight lined coat,
less tapered this year.
Armholes are frequently deep,
sleeves shorter and wider and
shoulder seams are often raglan
or dropped. Pockets are placed
low. Buttons are large and novel
to the point of embroidery.
Fur Trim
Lavish fur, with its look and
feel of delicious luxury, ;ends its
visual perfume in to both dress and
sport coat areas. Collars, long or
full around the neck, but never
really small, start ith mink and
continue through color-dlyed heaver,
fox and lynx.
Cuffs are important in the long
haired furs, fox and lynx. Some
of the untrimmed coats subtly
boast of luxury in fur linings.
The fabric story has many in
teresting facets. Crisp ottoman

WHAT TO DO TILL THE
PSYCHIATRIST COMES
Once upon a time at the University of Virginia there was a
coed named, oddly enough, Virginia University who was hand
some and kindly and intelligent and ingeniously constructed
and majoring ir psychology. Virginia went steady with a young
man on campus named, oddly enough, Oddly Enough who was
supple and fair and lithe and animated and majoring in phys ed.
Virginia and Oddly enjoyed a romance that was as idyllic as
a summer day, as placid as a millpond. Never did they fight
never, never, neverf-because Virginia, who was majoring in
psychology, did not believe in fighting. "Fighting," she often
said, "settles nothing. The scientific way is to look calmly for
the cause of the friction."
So whenever she and Oddly were on the verge of a quarrel,
she used to whip out a series of ink blot tests and they would
discover the true underlying cause of their dispute and deal
with it in an enlightened, dispassionate manner. Then, the
irritant removed, their romance would resume its tranquil,
serene, unruffled course.
After six months of this sedate liaison, Oddly wan so bored
he could spit. He loved Virginia well enough, but he also be
lieved that peop)le in love ought to fight now and then. "It
opens the pores," he said. "And besides, it's so much fun mak
ing up afterwards."
But Virginia would not be provoked into a quarrel. One night)
Oddly tried very hard. "Hey," lie said to her, "your nose looks()
like a banana, and your ears look like rwl1ar antenna, and your
face looks like a pan of worms."
"My goodness, we're hostile tonight I" said Virginia cheerfully
and( whipped 120 Rlorschach cards out of her reticule. "Come,"
she said, "let us examine your psychic app)aratus."
Oddly tried again. "You're fat and dumb and disagreeable,'?
he smdi(, "'and you'll l)e bald before you're thirty."
"I 1mm,'' saidl Virginia thoughtfully and lit a cigarette. "This
soundms like an anxiety neurosis with toteinismi, anagogic trauma,
and( a belt im the hack.''
" I ha te you," said Oddly. "I hate your looks and your clothes
and your toenails and your relatives and the cigarettes you
"Now, hold on, huster!" criedl Virginia, her eyes crackling,
her color mounting, her nostrils aflame. "Just keep a civil
tonigue ini your stuid( head whlen you talk about Marlboro!
Nobody's knocking that filter, that flavor, that pack or flip-top
i"'x while there's breath in miy body!i It's a full-flavored smoke,
it's a d1oozy, it's a dilly, it's a gas-and anybody who says a
word against it gets this.''
1y "this" Virginia meant a series of combinations to the
he(ad and liver, which she now delivered to Oddly and turned
on her heel and1( stormedl away.
Oddly b'rought her dlown with a flying tackle. "I love you
wit h all my heart," lie said.
''And Marlb,oro?" said she.
"And Marlboro even more," saidl he.
And they kissed and p)laitedl lov'e knots in one another's hair
and were miarried at Whitsuntide andl smoked hiappily ever after.
