The regular meeting of Student Government was called
to order by President Mike Quinn. The roll was called and
the minutes corrected as follows: Publications Committee
chairman Charles Bradley; tie between Skippy Canady, Ben
Boyd, and Holbrook Platts for 22nd place in elections for
representatives to State Student Legislature.
The president asked that regular procedure be dispensed
with in order to elect the 22nd representative from the three
who had tied.
Jimmy Mann moved that we vote by a show of hands.
Seconded and passed.
Bunky Joye moved that the two who were not elected be
first and second alternates. Seconded and passed.
Ben Boyd won the election. Skippy Canady is first alter
nate and Holbrook Platts. second.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Elections Committee: Jack Williams, chairman, submitted
the following report:
The first meeting of the 1960-61 Elections Committee was
held at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 27, in Room 203 of
the Russell House. The meeting was called to order by the
chairman, Jack Wilson, and the secretary called the roll.
Definite dates for the nominating convention, primary
election, and run-off were announced by the chairman. They
are as follows:
Friday, October 7-Nominating Convention.
Russell House Auditorium, 5:00 p.m.
Monday, October 10-Petitions due.
A box will be provided at the Russell House In
formation Desk for these petitions.
Monday, October 17-Primary voting.
9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Wednesday, October 18-Run-offs.
9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
All balloting will be held in the old faculty dining room of
:he downstairs Russell House Cafeteria.
The positions to be filled as Freshman Class officers:
President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, and His
:orian. Three representatives-at-large from the Freshman
,lass to serve on Student Council will be elected. These
,,el)resentatives will not have voting power, but will serve
is a voice for the freshman class. Student Council vacancies
:rom the following schools will be filled:
1 from the School of Engineering
2 from the Graduate School
I from Arts and Sciences
I from the School of Education
1 from the School of Plharmacy
Homecoming Queen will also be elected.
The members of the committee agreed that 1)etitions from

:ives from the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineer
ng must contain a minimum of 50 signatures. Council re
>resentatives from the Schools of Graduate, Education, and
P1harmacy must contain a minimum of 25 signatures, since
.hese schools have smaller enrollments than the ones men
ioned p1reviously.
Eligibility of candidates is as follows:
1. Any freshman may run for office.
2. Any upperclassman running for office must have an
overall average of 2.00
3. There is no grade requirement for Homecoming Queen,
)ut she must:
A. Be of junior or senior standing with a total of 60 or
90 semester hours.
B. Have attended the University of South Carolina for
three semesters.
Each member of the committee was given a specific job

;ponsible for sending letters to all fraternities and sorori
ies, Maxcy and McBryde Brotherhoods explaining the
1omination of candidate for lomecoming Queen.
JIack WVilliams, Berry St. .John, and Brenda Williams were
laced in charge of publicity. They will announce the elec
:ion (dates by p)osters, WUJSC, "The Gamecock," and various
>ther means such as letters, dlormitory announcements, etc.
The Dean of each school will r'eceive a letter urging him to
ancourage the students in that school to vote.
Budldy Hlardwick and Leonard Rice will see that the bal
lots are p)rinted and that a nmster p)oster is placed on the
Russell House bulletin board announcing the election results.
They will also secure a list of all students to be uisedl as a
heck list on election day.
It was not clear as to whether freshmen may vote for
tIpplerclass representatives to Student C ouncil, but the chair
nan is to check the Constitution before the election.
The members of the commit tee will be resp)onsib)le for se
:uring workers for the 1)o1ls on elect ion day.
T[here will be one box for the fresh man officers ballots,

No speeches will be made by the candidates. A meeting
will be held, however, of all candlidlates to give them a full
