Bot Miss Shuler and Dr. Silvestrit were members of the foreign lar guages department. Miss Nona D. Shuler, 24, a stal assistant in the language depar ment, was killed September 9 o her way to Hobart and Williai Smith College in Geneva, N. I when her automobile was involve in a collisiol.. Miss Shuler was the (laughter < Mrs. H-. L. F. and the late D Shuler, a Methodist minister. St was born in Florence, S. C. ar had lived in several South Car4 lina towns. She was a graduate of McCleni ghan High School and a Frenc major at Wesleyan College, Mi conl, Ga., wvhere she minoredi A HIistory of Art. All who made applicatio *or rush were required to pay on dollar and make a formal applica tion. The rush was sponsored by th Inter-Fraternity Council and th Pan-Hellenic Council, the officia organizations representing t h fraternities and sororities. Last night the following fra ternities held s m o k e r a (ope house), where t h e y welcome ;reshmen and new students inter ested in joining a fraternity: A) pha Tau Omega, Chi Psi, Kapp Alpha, Kaplpa Sigma, Lambda Ch Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Kapp Phi, Phi Epsilon Pi, Phi Kapp Sigma, Phi Sigma Kappa, Signi Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigm Nu. and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Invitations Today at 3:00 p.m., there will b a meeting of all rushees in Russe House. October 10, all fraternitie will hold stag smokers, at whic only rushees with invitations wi be permitted. Bids will be delivered to th Inter-Fraternity Council at 5:0 ) p.m. in room 209, Russell Hous( on October 11. At 8:00 p.m. th t bids will be handed out. Pledgin will take place on the next da October 12, from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m tat fraternity houses. The Inter-Fraternity Council ir formed rushees of the followin rules governing r i s h : (1) A alumni, affiliates, pledges, activ and inactive members of a frater nity must abide by the rules c rush. These rules are effective fo the entire semester unless other wise stated. (2) All infractions c the fall Rush Rules must be re ported to an officer of IFC by a IFC representative w i t h i n 4 hours after pledging. Registration (3) All men must register fo rush with IFC and pay the $ Iregistratiorn fee. Only those wh register will be considlered fo eligibility. (.1) IFC will hand ou 1all bids. December 9, am .January 20. Sorority Rush There will be a silent perio< 11rom 12:30 a.m. until 7:30 a.m every morning, except Sundays Ifrom Sept. 26 until Oct. 10. Ther4 wvill also be a silent period fron the time of the final stag smoke: at 9:00 p.m. Mon., Oct. 10, unti pledging at 5 p.m. on Wed., Oct 12. This means no contact of an3 kind betwveen fraternity men anc rushees during these periods. This service is primarily for students who do not have other transportation. There will be a fee of 25 cents. This is strictly on a "first come fir served" basis. No tickets will be sold in advance. The buses will leave at 6:45 p.m. from the front of Russell t House. I This service, sponsored by - the Pep Club, is on a trial I basis. If it is successful, it a will be continued for all home games. BLUE CROSS-BLUE SHIELD i Late registration for student insurance will be held Monday e and Tuesday from 9 to 4 o'clock in the Dean of Men's office. r Students who have applied through the mail must now pay c before the policies become ef fective. Anyone who has not yet applied may do so at the Dean's office. The $12 fee is payable on the date of applica tion. Half-time festivities will feature two outstanding high s c h o o I bands - the Rock Hill Bearcat 1 Band and the Brookland - Cayce e High School Band. Both groups are award-winning bands. f r Majorette Corps f Along with the Rock Hill Band - will be at precision drill team majorette co r p s, the Southern Belles, consisting of 32 girls. Babcock F Education The first Distinguished Profes- L rship to be set up by the Univer- p ty's Education Foundation has !en awarded to Dr. Havilah Bab- n )ck, head of the English depart- e t Babock ient. The award was made at the lumni dinner following the June ommencement. Head of the English department I jr nearly twenty-five years, Dr. labcock is widely known as a I peaker, teacher, and writer. Dr. Babcock is the author of iore than a hundred stories and ssays and several books. His first ook, "My Health Is Better in lovember," was first published by JSC Press, went through several rintings, and has since been re ublished by Holt, Rinehart and Vinston of New York. The book, a collection of hunt ng and fishing stories, has been iublished in a three-volume Braille dition by the Library of Con ,ress. Selections from the book ave been published in anthologies Lnd foreign languages. A new edi ion will be released by Holt with n a few days. The author's first novel, "The !ducation of Pretty Boy," was re eased only six months ago, but ias already established itself as a eading seller in bookstores. Others of his b o o k s include 'Tales of Quails and Such" and 'I Don't Want to Shoot an Ele )hant." The Professorship awarded Dr. Babcock is for writing. The sti >end which the award carries is lerived from an investment made )y the Educational Foundation.
