Portraits of two of the most dis
tinguished women educators in the
history of Carolina are now on dis
play in Sims and Wade Hampton
dormitories on campus.
Dr. Irene Dillard Elliott and Dr.
Arney R. Childs both served as USC
dean of women. The portraits were
painted by William F. Draper of
New York and were given to the
University by Dr. Donald S. Rus
sell, former president of USC, and
Mrs. Russell.
Dr. Elliott is a member of the
english department faculty, well
known for her "Great Books" course.
She made a special study of the
subject at the University of Chicago.
She also teaches Greek and Roman
drama and other courses.

Dr. Childs retired from the Uni
versity in 1957. She was awarded
the honorary Doctor of Literature
degree from USC at the June com

Dr. Elliott received her Bachelor'.

Woman's College and the M.S. and
Ph.D. degrees from the University
of North Carolina.
She was dean of women at Caro
lina in 1924-35. She is a member
of Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Kappa
Gamma, Chi Delta Phi, and Alpha
Delta Pi.

Deans
Dr. Childs received the Bachelor's
degree from the former College for
Women here in Columbia, the Mas
ter's degree from USC, and has
completed advanced studies at the
University of North Carolina and
George Peabody College.
She was dean of women ot Caro
lina for more than 20 years and
was also a member of the history
faculty.
Dr. Childs has published, through
the facilities of USC Press, four
volumes of letters and journals of
prominent South Carolinians. She has
served with the S. C. Historical
Assn., first as treasurer and then
as editor of its "Proceedings."
In 1853 only 11 senIors were
graduated from South Carolina
College, the smallest class since
1823. The small size was the result
of 108 students leaving the cam
pus because they didn't like the
college system for serving food
to the students.
