The golfers will travel to the campus of Duke University in order to better their last place finish in ACC golf last season. The Gamecocks are given a good chance of placing high among con ference golfers, based on their seasonal strength and the individ ual prowess of number one man Pete Richter. Richter tied for fifth place in the conference last season, and has been a consistent shooter all spring. The surprise of the team has been sophomore Norman Flynn, who has taken medalist honors in quite a few matches thus far. Flynn guided the Gamecocks to a second-place finish in the recent State Intercollegiate Tournament, and received staunch support from Gamecoc Places In HY MORRIS TATUM Sports Writer A talented squad of Bulldogs from The Citadel captured the championship trophy f r o m the University in the 33rd annual S o u t h Carolina Intercollegiate Track and Field Events held at the Rex Enright Athletic Center, May 5-6. The Citadel, by placing first in the one mile relay and the pole vault, clinched their win with a total of 55 points. Carolina over came the forecasters, who had predicted a possible third or fourth spot for the Gamecocks, and took second place with 50 points. Clem son had 27%, Furman took 32% and Presbyterian had % of a point. Charlie Bradshaw, Carolina's dynamic hurdler, was a a u r e choice for the outstanding individ ual trophy. Bradshaw won the 120 high hurdles, the 220 low hurdles, and placed fourth in the javelin. USC Sopha Shine The Gamecocks rested their hope for a repeat championship wvin upon the shoulders of four p)romi6ing sophomores: B o b b y Brown, Paul Masem, John Drake, and Bradshawv. Duke, UNC Strong Pre-tourney guessperts h a v e put the finger on North Carolina's Tar Heels or the homestanding Duke Blue Devils to win the meet, and last season's winner, Wake Forest, will have a hard road to travel if they are to retain the title. However, the Deacons possess probably the top linksman in the ACC in the person of defending individual c h a m p i o n, Ronnie Thomas. Thomas fired a 70 and a 68 last year for a 138 total, and has posted similar scores t h i s spring. The top challenger to Thomas' mark is Clemson's number one man, Mac Long. Long shot a weak 156 in last year's tourney, but has shown 'considerable improvement during the course of the current season. Netmen Meet at Chapel Hill Coach Walt Hambrick's tennis team is set to go in their 'meet at Chapel Hill today. Host North Carolina is in a repeat role as con ference champion, and the present contingent bears a strict resem blance to those squads which were highlighted by the likes of Bitsy Grant and Vic Seixas. The Gamecocks will rely on the kcs Grab S State En cool-headed man on the team, ran a good mile in 4:18.6. This was only slightly over 1959 winner Billy Latham's 4:17. John Pfalz graf, a good runner with plenty of promise, captured third place in the mile run. The broad jump competition registered a n o t h e r Carolina win in the person of Dan Upton. Y o u n g Upton, felled earlier with a leg injury, came back in good form with a winning jump of 23 feet, 1%/ inches. Ron nie Johnson was fourth. Bradshaw, who t a k e s the hurdles like a gazelle, won the 120 in :14.6 and the 220 in :24.4. Brown Breaks Record The high point of the meet was, of course, Bobby Brown's lighten ing win in the 100-yard dash over the favored 1959 winner Jim Pugh of The Citadel. Pugh, who had won last year in 10 flat, saw his own r e c o r d crashed by Carolina's supersonic cinderman who crossed the line in :9.7. Pugh finished see ond. The two-mile awards went to John Drake who won in 9:45.5. Masenm was second. The Young Drake, who has run a fine con sistent form all season, beld the lead all the way and almost tied Latham's record of 9:45.4 for last year. The top man on the Tar Heels' totem pole is a South Carolinian, Ben Geer Keys. Keys, who was the state singles champion at Green ville High School a few years back, teamed with Geoffrey Black to take the circuit doubles title last year. With team mate Phil Causey to back him up, the Tars should be able to count on another win in this department. North Carolina Coach Don Ska kle has gotten the most out of his sophomores, and according to him, "they have made the team click." Sophs Will Hansen, Garland Carl ton, John Talley, and Dick San ders have handled the bottom posi tions but have come through with clutch wins for Skakle this year. Deacs Have Champ Although not too strong as a team, Wake Forest's Demon Dea cons will have the defending sin gles champion on their squad to day and tomorrow. Thad Talley of Furman was first in the 880-yard run with a time of 1:55.5, and Jim Pugh of The Citadel grabbed the 220-yard dash in :21.9. In the latter event Bobby Brown of USC switched roles and took a second. FU Takes Field Events In the high jump, which went to Bob Blackledge of the Bulldogs with a jump of (; feet, 2 inches, Carolina placed no entrants. The shot put win went to Furman's outstanding Ken Garrett, who set a new state record with a throw of 55 feet and 1/4 inch. USC's Jack Pitt took a third spot in the competition. J. Barry Thomas hurled the javelin for 191 feet, 5% inches for a Citadel win and Ken Garrett sailed the discus through space some 155 feet, 10 inches. Bob Drost of the Gamecock team, fin ished third in the discus. A see-saw battle for points had existed all during the meet be tween The Citadel and Carolina. The last twvo events, the pole vault and the one mile relay, deC cided the result. Both were won by the Bulldogs.
