May Queen Follo#s Fai Natural Daytime Loc Light 1 BY STAFF WRITER What are good looks? An enigmatic question that no one has ever really answered; we aren't going to try. We'll just give you a few tips to help you start a beauty woutine that will bring you closer to that enigmatic something which is good looks. One of the first steps is learn ing that make-up Ideas change; but If you're a late movie fan you already know this. Make-up is a form of fashion, and it changes almost as frequentty as 'the hemlines. Good Complexion A good complexion begins long before the application of a tinted foundation. By now you should have established a nightly rou tine for cleansing the face; 'if you haven't, by all means do. First, a thorough cleansing with a good cream; if you have dry skin, a thick one will add moisture. For oily skins, one of the thin liquids is best. Then, a generous splashing of astrin gent, and you're ready for plenty of soap and water. For oily skins, a complexion brush will cleanse large open pores. Pat your face dry with a soft towel and splash on a final application of astringent. For dry skins, a thin application of night cream will add moisture. An oily skin should be washed at least three times every day, dry Bkins less often but a cleansing cream can be substituted for soap and water. Also for oily skins a weekly facial or clay masque will cleanse open pores. One of the grainy preparations is good for oily skins, use it as often as three times weekly. Day Make-Up Make-up for day should be light and natural--which means no eyeshadow, heavy eye-liner, or Irridescent mascara. Eye shadow is marvelous at night, and no one should be without ,it,-but not at high noon. To apply make-up, start with a fae cleansed as described above. For dry skins, a non sticky, transparent moisturizing lotion rwdll protect skin against chapping end loss of natural molidture. Next, an eye cream smoothed on the eyelids will sobbe and give a dewy-eyed look. To paint away undereye circles, smooth a shade of foundation lighter than that used for the rest of the face along the circle line. There are several stick foundations which do this job well. listed Fondatione Now comes tinted foundation, dabbed on and blended with long sweeping strokee. Forw over-rosy skins. a beige foundation; for Contestant, nily Traditi k lake-Uj sallow skins, a foundation with more pink. A new foundation that we can't say enough good things about - "ultima" complexion tints by Revlon. It adds nutrients and moisture without oiliness. A thin liquid that goes on easily and doesn't cake or turn orangey actually loks better the longer Its worn. A light application of rouge is next; a liquid rouge is easier to use since It can be blended easier. It takes a real expert to apply powdered rouge correctly. Area For Rouge Dab1 a little rouge under the eye and blend down over the cheek-bone, never further down than the corner of the nose, and out toward the hairliine. Use cot ton to wipe away the excess. Next, a thin application of powder, dabbed on and then pressed into the skin. Use a com plexion brush or cotton to wipe away excess. Powder can be used in a shade that matches founda tion or one that is slightly darker. To make daytime eyes, use a light eyeliner close to upper lashes, blend with tip of the fin ger; makes eyes seem larger. Daytime Mascara For daytime use, mascara in either light brown, gray or navy blue, never jet black even if you're a brunette. A pply mascara with an upward stroke of the brush, using clean, dry brush to remove excess. To fill out sparse eyebrows, use two ehades of eyebrow pencil -say, light and medium brown. Additions should be above the eyebrow line, using short, feath ary strokes. Blend with a slightly famip mascara brush. 28 Different Flavors of ICE CREAM Wingate, on To USC (Editor's note: This is the last in a series of interviews with the contestants for May Queen.) The last of the May Queen con. tesbants to be interviewed is Caro lyn Wingate, a senior secondary education major. C a r o l y n, who has always wanted to teach school, is learn 'ing what teaching is really like. She is doing her practice teach ing this year and says she is enjoying almost every minute of it. Carolyn transferred to Carolina from Converse after her fresh man year. In the Wingate family, coming to USC is more or less a family tradition; all of Careo lyn's family attended Carolina. Here at Carolina, Carolyn is a member of Chi Omega social so rority, a member of Student Council and Student Union and on the Honor Board. Carolyn enjoys dancing, water skiing and reading good books. Last summer she worked at Eastover resort in Massachusetts. "It was exciting, and I really liked New England; but I cer tainly did miss Southern food," she said. To give a more natural look cut the tips of the lashes into a jag ged line. Apply surgical glue to the edge of the lashes and place them close to your own upper lashes. Press into place with finger, let dry and mascara. If your eyes are close set try eye shadow stopping over the center of the eye and extend it upward toward the browline. For eyes that are too far apart spread shadow across the entire eyelid. Lipstick Technique Last step . .. lipstick. Straight out-of--the-tube methods can't compare with a lipstick brush. Prop 'the elbow on a flat surface, steady the chin with the L,ittle finger, and hold the brush ex actly as you would an ordinary Draw the upper lip first, one half at the time; same for the lower lip. Then, lightly fill in the outline, blot several times, apply a thin dusting of powder and start over; it lasts and lasts that way. If the lower lip is too full, a little lighter shade of lipstick will .make it seem smaller. To make a thin mouth look fuller, brush a fine line outside the ridge of the Lips using darker shade of lipstick than you use inside. When applying lipstick never cut corners, only someone with an extremely full mouth should resort to this. Now you're ready to face the daytime world. Seriously, it is 'hard on girls not to be able to wear Bermudas down to the post office in the aft ernoon, or out for a ride at night without havdng to explain that she 'has been in a drive-in the entire time. We are not asking to wear them to classes or uptown shopping or anywhere that Ber mudas are either unreasonable or socially incorrect; we just don't want to have to change clothes or put on a raincoat to walk to the sorority room, to check the mail, or even to walk down to the tennis courts. "There might be a good point in not wearing them to class. However, I can still see no out standing reason why they can't. It seems that the rules should be lenient enough to allow the girls to be comfortable." Most girls have enough taste to know when Ber mudas are proper attire and when they are not suitable. However, the rules are not made by us but by people who have our inter ests in mind; therefore, -regard less of wheather or not we agree with their choice, we should abide by their rules."
