Diamo: Meet Wake In Second Encounter BY DOUG GRAY Sports Writer After losing to Ohio State and Rollins and defeating Amherst in last week's "Baseball Week", the Gamecocks travel to Duke April 4 and to Wake Forest April 5. The Birds opened their seasor. of regular play against Ohio State and the Buckeyes downed them 9-2. Jerry Stone hit a double and batted in Carolina's only two points. After this defeert, the Gamecocks met Amherst the following afternoon and took the Yankees 12-7. In the final game of the week, the locals met host team Rollins and the national champs took the Birds 12-1. The Joe Justice nine broke loose in the second inning for eight runs and a commanding lead. Caro lina's only p o i n . came in the fourth on an error and a single by Bobby Robinson. With the season opener behind them, the diamond group turn their heads to the first ACC event with Duke. The Blue Devils, who tied with N. C. State for the cellar posi tion last season, have seven letter men returning and a group of promising sophomores. Don Alt man, a Pennsylvania native and also a standout quarterback on thr football squad last season, is on( of the pitchers for Ace Parker'e nine, along with letterman Johr Jenkins, the only senior on the hill corps. Catchers Are Experienced The backstops are only thre( deep but have the necessary ex. perience since all three are letter men. Art Browning did the ma jority of the catching last spring but received ample aid from Eri< Keller and Dixon Owens. The infield is well covered bui as is here at the University, the outfield needs a good bit of con sideration. The Blue Devils opened their season against Colby and ther traveled to Florida to participate in the Rollins Tournament.
