Meet Wake
In Second
Encounter
BY DOUG GRAY
Sports Writer
After losing to Ohio State and
Rollins and defeating Amherst in
last week's "Baseball Week", the
Gamecocks travel to Duke April 4
and to Wake Forest April 5.
The Birds opened their seasor. of
regular play against Ohio State and
the Buckeyes downed them 9-2.
Jerry Stone hit a double and batted
in Carolina's only two points. After
this defeert, the Gamecocks met
Amherst the following afternoon
and took the Yankees 12-7. In the
final game of the week, the locals
met host team Rollins and the
national champs took the Birds
12-1. The Joe Justice nine broke
loose in the second inning for eight
runs and a commanding lead. Caro
lina's only p o i n . came in the
fourth on an error and a single
by Bobby Robinson.
With the season opener behind
them, the diamond group turn their
heads to the first ACC event with
Duke. The Blue Devils, who tied
with N. C. State for the cellar posi
tion last season, have seven letter
men returning and a group of
promising sophomores. Don Alt
man, a Pennsylvania native and
also a standout quarterback on thr
football squad last season, is on(
of the pitchers for Ace Parker'e
nine, along with letterman Johr
Jenkins, the only senior on the
hill corps.
Catchers Are Experienced
The backstops are only thre(
deep but have the necessary ex.
perience since all three are letter
men. Art Browning did the ma
jority of the catching last spring
but received ample aid from Eri<
Keller and Dixon Owens.
The infield is well covered bui
as is here at the University, the
outfield needs a good bit of con
sideration.
The Blue Devils opened their
season against Colby and ther
traveled to Florida to participate
in the Rollins Tournament. They
are now in the midst of the Florida
Southern Tournament in Lakeland,
Meet Deacs Tuesday
The Gamecocks travel to Win
ston-Salem the following day tc
take on another member of thE
Big Four. Jack Stallings, the new
coach at Wake Forest, will hay'

produced there last spring. Th<
Demon Deacons woro in a thre,
ay tie with Cleimon and Nort
Carolina for fi'rst place last seasoi
r.nd lost to the Tigers to tie UN(
for second piace.
As Stallings returns to his AIm;
Mater, he finds nine returning let

club. The pitching staff is th
nucleus of his first college basebal
club, dc.minating the lettermen wit
five. Jerry West, no relation t
the basketballer, and Walter Lan,
are expected to lead the group b)u
Jerry Galehouse, .J a c k Karcher
and Bob Plemmons are also atron,
contenders.
In the catching department, Buel
Jolly leads the backstop buti

and sophomore Pat Williams.
Infield Strong

ball team, battle it out for th
a h o r t stop position. Lettermar
Charlie Forte handles the third bai

The outfield positions are no
lacking except in the centerfiek
spot which may be a little weak
Two lettermen, Jay Franklin an<
Winston Futch, hold down theil
respected positioan while Johann
