Pleats Are Fashion's
Spring
(Editor's Note: Sketches drawn
by Eliabeth Keefel, especially
for this article.)
BY LEE JORDAN
Fashion Reporter
The byword of this spring's
suits is ease of movement; they
are gently tailored and feminine.
There are dress-like suits with
none of the stiff mannish tailor
ing of past years.
The pleat has never received
so much attention as in this
spring's suit. Every kind of
pleat; box, knife, inverted or
stitched pleats. As a result there
Pleated Skirt
is no problem in finding a
pleated skirt to suit any figure.
This soft whirl of skirt and
the 'hemline, which is the same,
an inch or two below the knee,
gives the suit an easier, leggler
look. It places more emphasis
on shoes and legs.
SUITS TURN COSTUME
Even the slender suit has easy
unconstrained tailoring. This is
the result of trouser pleats and
unstitched darts. Some suits,
usually in a plaid or check, are
cut on the bias. This marks the
suit fit and drape better.
The suit has also become a
costume. The jacket is open to
reveal a sleeveless dress or
blouse, Versatile and so practi
cal, without the jacket the dress
can be worn through the day and
on into the night.
Really "avant grade" is the
full length coat with a matching
skirt. The coat may be cut like

CARDIGAN SUI'
The channel or cardigan suit
is still very much with us. In
checeks or plaids braided in con
treating colors and worn with a
man-tailored blouse, it elieves
a look or timeless 'and under
stated elegance.
More practical fashion Is the
three-piece ensemble with ' the

dress and suit. It is no problem
when the skirt 'has a matching
pull-over blouse and jacket.
Suit jackets are softly tailored
and reluctant to hug the body,
giving a looser, easier style.
Some of the jackets are almost
straight with only the barest
hint of a waistline.
SEVEN-EIGHTHS COAT
Jackets go to any lengths but
usually stop just above the hip
bone. Boleros are seen with slim
skirts, intersected by wide belts.
Also around is the belted jacket,
slightly bloused and stopping a
few inches below the waist.
More news in suit coats is the
seven-eighths coat; it is just
long enough for a few inches of
skirt to show. It is usually
checked and flared from natural

mostly short. They are cropped

Shapes such as the cape sleeve

and the bell sleeve, which is top

To be worn with the new
sleeve lengths are long and longer

COLLARS ARE BIG
Collars are either big and
showy or just not there at all.
Most of the big collars are
notched and open wide at the
throat for a brilliant flash of
scarf, beads or flowers.
There are some small collars,
school boy collars, and small up
right bands that frame the face.
It's a great day for plaids and
checks. The glen plaids are tak
ing over some of the popularity
won by the hound's tooth checks
last year. Checks and plaids have
taken to fresh, new colors, such
as three shades of pink or white
and yellow.
