If ye would know Carolina, visit Russell House. Russell House might be called O the heart of Carolina, by situa tion and by use. About 75% of non'class time (and much class cutting time) is spent in Russell House. T h e building may be located by looking for a sweep ing white ramp surrounded on three sides by veil block. Really b e y o a d description, though it is, well try. Let's take it by floors. On first . . . oops! ... on ground floor is the main cafe teria, with its little sidecar, the athletic dining -area; the barber shop; the Campus Shop; the Post Office; the Cockpit (a can teen from which sandwiches and soft drinks ma'y be procured); and, of course, the lobby. The lobby contains a square yellow couch which resembles nothing so much, bookshelves (leave books at your own risk), and a t r o p h y case honoring Steve Wadiak in which the pic ture has, been tilted for several months. On first floor, there is a mez zanine-like a r e a surrounding the stairs. Near the stairs is the information desk, just ask the man behind the desk, he'll tell you. Also on first is the Game cock Room,' easily the i o s t popular sspot on campus. This, too, is a canteen, but it contains a grill. This is the room of the round I i g h t s and the "quick service." There are no signs saying keep your feet off the tables and your grubby paws off the pic tures, just a g u a r d smiling malevolently as he fondles his .45. Leading off from the lounge are a record room and a piano room. There is also a much too small assembly room, in which free movies are shown every Thurs (lay night to those willing to risk the hard chairs. This room is often used for conventions from "The Outside" (The Outside be ing the city of Columbia and the state of South Carolina). Also there is a beautifully furnished faculty lounge and (lining area used by the faculty when they can squeeze past visitors. There are various and sundry meeting rooms on t h i s floor used, oddly enough, for meetings. And, so to second, or the business floor. On this floor are located the offices of various student enterprises, along with the Dean of Men's office, the alumni o f f i e e s, and the "Y" lounge. Among the student enterprises on this floor are the offices of (going down the hall) WUSC, the student-operated radio sta tion; "The Gamecock," the stu dent newspaper; and the "Gar net and Black," the student-pub lished yearbook. The WUSC offices are charac terized by hustle and an at first unnoticed efficiency. There is a fascination about the mystical language used a r o u n d these offices. Such words as: "mike," "cue the re c o r d " "promo," "monaural," and other atrocious terms are used with frightening regularity. "The Gamecock" offices may be described in one word-chaos. Invisi puff f Sae -Block< ..:rn ps and clans to discuss the hap. There are stacks and stacks of old newspapers-on the floor, of course. Then there is the "effic cient" bulletin b o a r d with its myriad manila envelopes, notes, and cartoons, with thumb tacks sprinkled liberally over the whole mess. Any important messages are not, of course, put into the desig nated envelope ( w h e r e they would remain unseen by the world until time unknown), but are written in red pencil and thumbtacked in an obvious (to anyone but the person for whom they are intended) position on the board. The walls are rimmed with honors won by past staffs. The "Garnet and Black" office carries out the all but impossible task of sorting the five-thousand odd s t u d e n t s according to various statistics and compiling the whole mass into a yearbook. The alumni office keeps rec ords on all past graduates of USC. Sometimes filling such re quests as, "Give me a list of all living alumni in the Barnwell area," within one afternoon. The D e a n of Men's- office handles, along with the chastise ment of male students, student jobs, absence excuses, etc. The "Y" lounge is a place for people who 'want to play the piano, read the "New Yorker," or just rest in peace. Third floor is not to be neg lected. Contrary to much stu (lent speculation, it does not con tain a dungeon for students who take five unexcused cuts.
