The Rub The wash tubs ~placed strategically ,throughout Russell House on rainy days are both hazardous and eye,sores. It seems to us to be a round-about way of avoiding solu tion of a problem. Quite obviously, the roof of Russell House leaks or at any rate water gets through the roof and inside the building. This has been happening for some time now; it is no new development. Pails placed under these leaks seem to be a stop-gap measure, but is showing signs of becoming a permanent fixture through out the building. Russell House cost the tax We Affect We read in a recent issue of the Clemson "Tiger" an account of a campus election. The story pointed out that fifteen proposed amendments to the Student Council Consti tution had failed to pass because not enough students participated in the balloting. This serves as a good example of the apathy of students on many college campuses across the country. Carolina is no exception to the wide spread disinterestedness which flourishes throughout our society. Americans now view almost everything with the attitude that the outcome will not affect them. Al most, because once a fire is sufficiently kindled the people can and do act with au thority and meaning. The American university is a looking glass of our society and culture. It is a gathering together of many persons with different outlooks on life, different back grounds, different hopes and plans. These "different" people are then fused into one body and from this body emerges the leaders of tomorrow with the knowledge and under standing that they obtained during their col lege years. Carolina is a mirror of the state. Here, we have representation from every county Defensively; Ul Everyone has an opinion these days as to how far we are behind Russia in the arms race. Public officials right and left are con tradicting each other with statements on this issue which is of the utmost concern to the public. Just who do we believe? The American government is responsible for the confusion which has befallen the public regarding our preparedness for a missile war and our retaliatory power. The public has not been accurately informed. They have been presented one side, Wash ington's side of the story. Probably few people in Washington really know how we stand in the arms race at p)resent. These chosen few are limited by security restrictions as to how much of this vital information they can release to the p)ublic ; however, it is a question of whether what they do release is good or bad for the American public. Much information today is placed under a security classification which keeps it in official channels and away from the press. We do not challenge these restrictions; in Hull Thae C We were extremely pleased with the per formance of our basketball team in Char lotte this past weekend. It is the first time in the history of the University that both N. C. State and North Carolina have gone dlown to defeat on successive nights to the Gamecocks. We are proud of our basketball team and the coaches, Bob Stevens, Walter Hambrick, and Gordon Stauffer. The Gamecocks went into both games as definite underdogs, given little chance of winning b)y the experts. This role helped the Gamecock efforts. They were a de termined bunch of athletes out to make the experts look foolish. I'm sure that they would not be pleased to learn that it is being allowed to deteriorate because someone isn't doing his job. These tubs make quite an impression on visitors to our House. One only need notice the look of amazement on the faces of guests who pass by these tubs on their way to a meeting or luncheon. We suggest and urge those in charge of maintenance to take steps to eliminate this problem before Russell House becomes use able only in fair weather. The State in the state plus many students from out-of state. Here, the student brings his ideas and deposits them with the ideas of other students. Through learning, contact with others, and maturity, these original ideas undergo change and the student evolves with a distinctly different character from the original one with which he entered the University. This development of character which takes place in college, helps determine the future ideas of South Carolina and the United States. Spinoza said, "The only en during good in human life is the develop ment of character." Every area in the state will be affected by the students who grad uate or attend Carolina. In this respect, we have a duty to per form for ourselves and to the people of the state. We must cultivate the good, reject the bad, and come out better citizens and capable leaders for the state and the coun try. We must be serious and take an active part in the things which affect us and our way of life. We need to participate more zestfully in campus organizations. We need to remember and practice the advice of old sayings-"Anything worth doing is worth doing well." . S. Or Russia? stead we know that they are necessary and willingly accept them. What bothers us is the news which is released to the public. General Maxwell D. Taylor, former Chair man of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says that we are behind Russia in the arms race and need to install a crash program in order to catch up. President Dwight Eisenhower, con versely, assures the public that America is strong and has the means at her disposal to conduct a war if necessary. We have been getting the Abbott-Costello routine-who's on first. What are you and I supposed to believe? The information concerning our national dlefense emanating from Washington ha! been slanted. The American public has beein spoon-fed, like a three-months-old baby, the Washington story of our arms capability. The public is defenseless against this type of information ; they see it, hear it, read it, andl most of the time believe it. It is gratifying any time that the Game cocks can defeat a member of North Caro lina's Big Four. Last weekend, we were more than gratified. The invincible Tar Heels, leaders in the ACC, have been toppled from their lofty perch. The Big Four dloesn't seem to be so big now; and with the tournament just around the corner, we are anxious to see just what will happen in Raleigh. We are behind the Gamecocks all the way. Anthony E. Brown 'Sandlapp Needs C IT WAS with a great deal of happiness that we read in this paper that a literary magazine is being planned for publication this semester. The Sandlappcr, never a widely accepted con glomeration of some good writing and much very bad. The main fault of this now defunct pro duction was the attempt to reach "everyone" by combining a- hu morous slant as well as a more serious and artistic one. That is not to say that humor has no place in a college-type publica tion. Certainly humor is one of the more difficult arts to master, but consider too that all that is humor is neither art nor funny, and to throw a batch of ill-con ceived cartoons and jokes into a magazine that also emphasizes higher literary forms is not an appealing format for the readers' enjoyment. There are surely on this cam pus many students Vho have talent of a literary nature, either in prose or poetry, and who feel the need for a means for express ing such talents. Also, many of the faculty would be happy to take part in the formation of a medium in which they might ex press an idea on a certain sub ject or present some uniqiue thesis for student consideration. Tj H EREFORE, we suggest that the staff of the proposed magazine throw the not too glor ious traditions of the past out and formulate a pattern of presenta tion that wvould be enjoyable, en lightening, and interesting to all students wvho read. Perhaps the magazine could be devided into sections with headings such as ''Opinion,'' "Fiction," "Poetry," "Mystery," and "Description." Of course, all of these may not appear in each issue, either be cause of lack of material for a particular area or because of an abundance of quality wvriti ng wvhich would n(e.essitate the omission of another less worth while section. The magazine should at least contain material which is aimed at the interest it will create at the University. There is nothing more dull than a publication of a literary nature that has all the wvorks ini it written in the same mood or frame the same general point of view, for the purpose of such a magazine is Pitching Horseshoes We close with these two an nouncements from women's clubs.
