Battle Tigers in AC : Birds Frosh Hit Fifth Win Saturday S o u t h Carolina's Biddies h eleven of their first twelve sho *rom the floor in the second ha to turn a close game into a rot and a 108-78 win over Spartai burg Junior College last Saturda night at Spartanburg.- It was the fifth victory in seven starts. Trailing most of the first hal a spurt in the last three minuti lifted the Dixie Legion to a 414 lead at halftime. With Jim Collii and Scotti Ward leading the wa the Biddies connected on 11 of I field goal attempts and 8 of free throws to take a 61-37 lea and from then on it was no contes Collins with 25 points and Wai with 21 paced the Carolina fros who topped the century mark f the second game in a row. B< Haney chipped in 19 points ar 12 rebounds. Big Dave Prevozni collected 14 rebounds and a 111 number of points. Each Carolir player scored. Coach Gordon Stauffer and tt Legion take to the hills tomorro night for an encounter with th Clemson Cubs prior to USC-Clen son varsity clash. Followin, this !ontest, the Birds will tangle with Furman University in the USC rield house Wednesday, January !7. Clemson, under the direction of _oach Press Maravich, got off on ;he wrong foot early in the season, )ut has begun to show signs of ife in later contests, hoping to >etter last season's 8-16 record. The Tigers are currently led by eam captain George Krajack, a ienior, and sophomore sensation nd a high school All State choice it Piedmont, Larry "Choppy" Pat erson. The latter is the team's eading scorer, with over 15 points >er game, and has won a starting )osition on the Blue Ridge Bengal luintet. Other starters at Tiger own are Earle Maxwell, a 6-7 unior center, Ed Krajack, brother o George, and Walt Gibbons. Tigs Near Bottom Clemson comes into the game vith a 5-7 overall record and a )-2 mark conference-wise, placing hem near the bottom of the ACC adder in seventh place. 'ersity of South Carolina fresh iian basketball players, g u a r d Jimmy Collins of Dumont, N. J., nias established himself as the 'sleeper" of the Biddie squad. The 3-1, 165-pounder a v e r a g e d 13.7 points in the first seven freshman games, but it has been his quick ness and floor play that have freshman coach Gordon Stauffer and varsity coach Bob Stevens smiling. Says Stauffer, "Ward and Collins complement e a e h other well. Scotti is the better outside shot, but Collins ia a little faster and an effective driver."
