With the nucleus of his pitching
staff back, baseball coach Joe
Grugan has announced that the
1960 edition will open the coming
season March 24. The lidlifter
should he one of the highlights of
the year, as the Carolina nine will
take out the first three days of the
year for a round-robin tourney
sponsored by Rollins College of
Winter Park, Florida.
In the annual Rollins Collegiate
B.seball Week, the Gamecocks
will tangle with Amherst, Ohio
State and Rollins.
Comprising the strong pitching
corps, which was the major com
ponent of Carolina's attack last
s e a s o n , are returnees Roger
Groves, Bud S w y g e r t , Roger
Brown, and Melvin Quick. Eligible
this year, after a fine season in
1958, will be .lim Craig, along
with sophomores George Eppes
and Perry Ellisor.
The catching staff will likely be
handled by Itobert Ellenburg, while
so0phomore Hobby Robinson will
serve as his understudy.
In the infield, the main loss was
that of Ken.Rosefield, first base
man and the team's leading hitter.

Centerfilder Jimmy Hunter, an

Swim Team
Sees Defeat
In Two Trips
South Carolina's swimming team
invaded the campuses of Davidson
College and Duke University the
week-end of January 8 and 9,
only to be defeated by,both schools.
The Gamecocks met Davidson
Priday afternoon at the Davidson
swimming pool and entered all ten

Carolina swimmers are as follows:

Stevens entered the Marine Corps
in 1942 and was commissioned at
Quantico, Va. He served in the
South Pacific theatre as a platoon
leader. Stevens was discharged as
a first lieutenant in 1947.

Grant Aids
In Football

Giese has announced the signing
of three highly touted high school
stars to grants-in-aid at the Uni
versity for next year's freshman
squad.
The first, Billy Kaigler, an im
pressive two-way guard frow St.
Matthews, is described by Coach
Giese as one of the better pros
pects to come out of this state in
recent years.
Another 1 i n e m a n , 225-pound
tackle Byron Godwin, has also
inked a four-year contract here.
The Lake City native was selected
for several Palmetto All State
teams and played in the annual
Shrine Bowl in Charlotte early-in
December.
The strapping lineman has also
received praise f r o m his high
school coaches, as well as Univer
sity tutors who have seen him in
action.
The third player is Jay Doo
little, a triple-threat halfback from f
Greer. The 165-pounder has been
a regular on the Yellow Jacket
squad since his sophomore year,
and this year was elected team
captain and the squad's m o a t
valuable player.
Although hampered by an early
season leg injury, Doolittle man
aged to pick up 771 yards via the
overland r o u t e, averaging 4.5
yards per carry, in one of Greer's
worst seasons in recent campaigns.
lie also excells in passing and
punting, posting a 39.2 aferage
in the latter department.
Doolittle was cited as being
active not only in sports, but in
a t u d e n t government affairs as
well, and ranked in the top ten
per cent of his class scholastically.
