The Birds were scheduled to play Tennessee in Knoxville last night, then move to Nash ville to take on Vanderbilt tomor row night. The Gamecocks came out of three tough games last week in excellent physical condition and optomistic about their chances of winning some of the upcoming games. Coach Bob Stevens ap peared pleased as the Gamecocks prepared to leave for the Tenn essee trip. "The thing that pleases me so much is the way the students and fans have turned out for the games, and the response that they have given the players. The stu dents and fans deserve some part of the credit for our performances this season," Stevens said in con nection with last week's three home games. "I expect to win every baU game," the ever-smiling Stevens said in reiterating his basketball philosophy, then summed up the season thus far, "They (the basket ball team) have given an entire effort in every ball game." The Gamecock basketballers will have a short Christmas holiday seasio) from December 20 until the 2f;th. They return here for prac tive before entering the Richmond Invitational tournament Dec. 29 n0. Richmond, LaFayette, and Wil liam and Mary will take part in the tournament along with the Gamecocks. Drawings will be held just prior to tournament time. The Birds continue on the road imeeting Miami January 2, and Florida S t a t e January 4. The Gamecocks then move Northward and take on Maryland and Virginia .January 8 and ) rospectively. The next home game will be against Wake Forest January 13. The contest was wvith Virginia in the Oyster Bowl at Norfolk, Va. In the final quarter of the game, with Virginia leading, 14-0, the Giamecocks, with less than seven minutes remaining, scored their three touchdowns while but five plays from scrimmage and one minute and 415 seconds on the clock elapsed! Final Score 21-14 'The astounding result was a 21-14 victory. Here's how the three touchdown is developed: Carolina drove from their 30-yard line to the Virginia 26 on two long passes by Quarterback Dick Balka, who had just come into the game.
