Writing any sort of column for any publi cation leaves one open to crit cism -- e o n - structive, some demolishing. -I have found recently that an opinion is not the wisest choice for some one aspiring to stay in the good graces of as many people as possible. Having no personal axe to grind, I find much of the criticism rather hard to take. Not Personal Opinion The opinions expressed in my column are often taken to be my own personal opinion. To the contrary, in ' many cases I am diametrically opposed to the views of the majority in the column. I have been accused of using fictitious names in the column. If anyone bothers to check, 'he will find that all of the persons are real, with one exception Sally Lee Phillips . .. and that's another story. A certain professor said, to paraphrase, why bother to make a statement, it wouldn't be Squoted corretly. anyway. To me, these have a certain significance they mean that this is what the person said. .imnied Space There has also been criticism that the column does not present the feeling of the majority on campus. This is undoubtedly true at times. With the limited space available for the column, it is impossible to print every one's opinion about every.thing. In printing only four or five opinions, there cannot possibly be an exact ratio to the pro and con feeling on campus. A reporter gathering material for a newspaper may be a rep resentative of the paper, but the reporter cannot be responsible for the content of any column save his own. Courtesy Needed Certainly personal vindicative ness is not in order on the part of the person being Interviewed, particularly when the reporter is making an attempt to present both sides of a controversial question. It might well be remembered by certain faculty members that even in a teacher-atudent rela tionship, courtesy is not out of place, whether the views of the two participants coincide or not. There is one encouragink fac tor in the criticism-it proves that people are reading my of ferings. This is all that a jour nalist asks. So . . . rave on. The purpose of the banquet was to celebate the founding of the fraternity fifty-five years ago. Bernie Jones, national presi dent of the fraternity, addressed the group. Among the alumni present were Durward Owen, national executive secretary; Bob Register, chapter advisor, and Mrs. Register; and Professor George Rogers of the history de partment. Air Society Opens Year With Social The Arnold Air Society held its annual fall semester social Tuesday evening at the Fort Jackson Officers' Club. The society was honored by the presence of Colonel Johnston, Professor of Air Science, and the other detachment officers; Major Arther, Captain Doan, Captain Rast, Captain Savres and their wives. One of the purposes of the social is to open officially the so cial year of the .society in lieu of the coming Military Ball which is one of the largest formal dances of the year. The Ball will be held on Feb. 19 and is spon sored by the Arnold Air Society. The sponsor for the dance were chosen following this party.
