The Doug Clark combo will provide the music tonight for the semi-formal ball, held at the Armory in West Columbia, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Climaxing the weekend festivi ties tomorrow night, Furman Nead is slated to provide the musical entertainment for the formal dance at the Columbia Hotel, from 8 until 12 p.m. Since its formation in 1945 Cotillion has been one of the two most significant dance clubs on campus. It holds two formal dances a year, one per semester. Membership in the Cotillion Club is limited to approximately 125 members chosen from the social fraternities on the Caro lina campus. New members are elected to the organization each semester as vacancies occur. The time has come for all these things, so the Walrus says-and who knows, the Walrus may be right. Sitting in a dormitory room on a day when you'd like to go walking somewhere, anywhere, many external distractions drift into the room, uninvited. Doors slam. A telephone rings. Someone yells "answer the phone -well someone PLEASE answer the phone?" Someone is having a birthday party. Verbal invitations issue. Further along someone announces a bridge game. Somehow sounds from the two parties mingle and swim past. The telephone again. Someone laughs. Perhaps it's coming from the party. She keeps on laughing boisterously-others join in, but their voices keep well into the background. I find myself not studying at all, hut thinking of clowns. And of one I'd seen once when n child, who made so many peo ple laugh that I wanted to run away and become a clown. Why I find myself thinking of clowns I don't know- if all the sea were boiling hot and whether pigs have wings-I suppose. Footsteps in the hall fade away. Someone, singing, hurries past the door .Another set of footsteps, then someone knocks on a near-by door-to study is imapossible. Conversation floats by. I hear exponents from mutual admira tion societies. Other sketches rush by-the ice cream machine is broken-he's not the one I wanted to call me-care if I borrow your gray sweater? Some things I say! I asked if he could speak English and they said he's from Chicago. In the distance the sound of a piano and a group singing reach out.
