Placement Schedules Interviews The Division of Personnel and Placement has scheduled inter views with Ohrysler corporation and with Loclaheed Aircraft cor poration during the week of Oc tober 12 through October 16, ac cording to Mrs. MeVey, head of the division. Chryeler corporation will be in the school of engineering Tuesday to interview seniors in physics and electrical, mechanical, aeronautib cal, and metaflurgical engineering. Lockheed Aircraft Corporation will be in the school of engineer ing Wednesday to interview sen iors in physics and chemical, civil, electrical, a n d mechanical engi neering. - Interested students may con tact the company representatives through the school where inter views are set up. Capt. James Transfers To Norfolk Captain James H. Campbell, pro fessor of naval science and com mander of the N.R.O.T.C. unit at -the University has been transfer red to a tour of duty in the Norfolk area. Captain Campbell left last week after having served for one year w i t h the University N.R.O.T.C. unit. Colonel Jeter, a new addition to the Naval Science staff is tempo rarily acting as unit commander. Faculty Meeting Of 265 Members Hears Sumwalt The Uuiversity faculty, consist ing of 265 members, met for its first meeting of the fall semester on October 7, in the Law School auditorium. President S u m w a 1 t addressed the faculty which holds its meet ings on the first Wednesday of every month. This semester there are 75 grad uate assistants to aid the faculty members in the various depart ments. Rocket Club To Organize This Week The University of South Caro lina chapter of the American Rocket Society will hold its first mceting of the year Thursday, Oc tober 15, to elect officers and plan programs for the year. The meeting will be held in room 102 of Russell House at 7 p.m. and all interested students and faculty members are urged! to attend. The American Rocket Society, is a national association for the advancement of rocketry, jet pro pulsion, and astronautics. The Uni versity chapter is the first stu dent or professional chapter to be' formed in the Carolinas. . Although techincal information on the space age can be gained, this is not entirely a technical so ciety and membership is open to al.l University students, whether engineers or laymen, who are in terested in missiles rockets, and outer space.. Those joining at this meeting will be charter members of the USC chapter of the ARS. Programs will be presented at each meeting and it is hoped that the student chapter will be able to undertake a campus-wide proj ect of some merit. Freshmen "Y" officers will meet Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. in room 101, Russell House. * * S Westminster Fellowship Assistant Chaplain William Ma jor of the State Hospital will ad Westminster Inaugurates New Program A new fact is being explored in the programming of the Westmin ster Fellowship for Sunday, Oct ober 11 which involves the inaug uration of two separate s t u d y groups for that night and the next four or five weeks to follow. This WF program will offer Presbyterian students and all other interested persons wishing to at tend a choice of depth study in "Christianity a n d Communism" w i t h political science professor Charles Weasmer as resource lead er or in "Conscience on Campus" lead by Robert Heywood, ministeri al student. A light meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday for the weeks to follow but this Sunday's session will b e g i n at 6 p.m. Professor Weasmer's g r o u p concerns the comparative studies of t h e two ideologies and the Heywood group will be involved wvith studies of campus mores. Student leaders for the groups will be Larry Weber and Janie Hayes. H ypatian Society Chooses Of ficers; Seay, President Barbara Seay has been elected president of Hypatian Literary So ciety for this semester. Jo Church is vice-president, and Ann Trotter is secretary. Other officers are Marian Jeter, treasurer; Kathy Davis, historian; Carrie Bartell, critic; and Gwennie Bennett, chaplain. Hypation, the oldest literary so ciety for girls at the University, was formed about the year 1915. Membership is open to all girls who have been students at Carolina at least one full semester and have at least a 'B' in all English courses they have taken. Meetings are held on alternate Tuesdays at 5 p.m. in Clariosophic Hall. General D. W Visits Air RO Major General David W. Hut Dhinson, Commander of the Ninth Air Force out of Shaw AFB, visit ed the University's AFROTC unit luring drill last Thursday as a guest of Colonel James Johnston, professor of air science for the detachment. General Hutchinson was accom panied by Colonel Johnston; Cap tain John D. Sayre, an instructor; and Captain Lewis A. Doan, com mandant of cadets. The General has had a long and colorful career, with several dee orations for combat bravery and leadership. He is credited with fly ing 172 combat missions with a total of 267 combat hours. Preceding his military career Colonel Johnston attended R an dolph-Macon Military Academy a1 Front Royal, Virginia, and Virginis Military Institute, graduating fron ~7 Col. James E. Johnston VMI in 1937 with a BS degree ir civil engineering. In 1952 he tool a Man Power and Executive Man. agement Course at George Wash, ington University, Washington, D C. Colonel Johnston a t a r t e d hi military career in 1937 when h was commissioned a second lieu tenant in the Field Artillery Re serve. In January of 1941, he wa assigned to active duty at For Jackson, S. C. After the war, he returned t< civilian life and owned and operat ed the Johnston Aircraft Corpora tion, a distributor for the Cessns Aircraft Company in Atlanta, Ga Hutchinson TC Group the silver star, purple heart, an< distinguished service medal. During much of his early career the General worked in aerial photo graphic reconnaissance, h a v i n ma n y important assignments i this field. In World War II, General Hut chinson was commander of th< 308th bomber wing which was on< of the foremost combat units in th< armed forces advance in the Paci ic. Professional Group Elects Fall Officers The Beta Gamma chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, a nationa-l busi ness and commercial fraternity has elected fall term officers. The chapter has also started its fall pledging program. The odficers are: president, Jerry Burgess; first vice presi dent, Bernard England; second vice president, James Anderson; secretary, Charles Banks; treas urer, Frank Strausbaugh; chancel lor, Elmer Wiggins; and historian, William Hearn.
