With ] By BOBBY ALFORD Sports Editor 8 out h Carolina's Gamecocks begin their quest for a conference football championship against a rugged Duke team tomorrow night. The Gamecocks have never won the AOC title. Last year South Carolina beat GDuke 8-0. This was only the fourth time in 17 games that a Carolina team has e m e r g e d victorious against the Blue Devils. Since the fomation of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Duke has been beaten only four times by conference op ponents; Carolina did it twice. This is an important game for both teams; it .could go a long way In deciding the conference cham pionship. In pre-season football polls Duke was picked to finished third in the ACC and Carolina fourth. North Carolina and Clem son were rated one-two, respec tively. Four Return Head Coach Warren Giese begins the 1959 season with an inexperi enced team. Only four starters from the 1958 club are returning. For the fun of . "We have worked harder this year than last in order to fill the holes left by graduation," he Maid. Coach Bill Murray has his entire line back from last year which is anchored by two prospective All Americans, Mike McGee and Jim Gardner. McGee weighs In at 215 points and Gardner at 220. Murray is expecting great things from this year's backfield. George Harris is a fine passer and good ball handler at quarterback.-Dean Wright and Jack Wilson are two highly prized halfbacks. Giese considers Saunders the finest blocking back he has ever been associated with. He says that Saunders is looking better than ever and that his play is high lighting the Gamecock scrimmages. Strong on Defense The Carolina defensive line is again big and strong. Ed Pitts and Jake Bodkin, two prospective All-Americans, anchor a massive unit. Great things are expected from Jim Nemeth, Don Miles, Jack Ashton, Jerry Frye, Jack Pitt, and Bill Jerry.
