Dean Of Wom Laughter East By MARGARET SCOTT Society Editor Miss Elizabeth Clotworthy, Dean of Women, has been with the University for three years. She has her M.A. degree from Columbia University, has taught high school in Charleston, and has served in the Wofhen's Marine Corps. Dean Clotworthy has the greatest admiration for her girls. As she says, "I am extremely proud of Carolina's women. Every day I see and hear something to make me glad to be a part of this University. "The average co-ed is well adjusted, mature. She proves she is getting an education by her scholastic standing. This is the best looking group of college girls in South Carolina!" Four Out of Five Miss Clotworthy says that the women of Carolina are fine indi viduals. "For every one that falls by the way, there are four that prove themselves of excel lent standing!" In speaking of the difficulties of the freshman girls upon ar rival here, she notices that the most common problem for them is getting used to being away from home and being a part of a large organization. She advises the girls to set up their own rules and regulations for every situation before the situation arises. Also, it is wise to be prepared for discourage ment. In the first few days, im pressions are likely to be dis couraging. Ability to Choose "The mark of the educated per son is his ability to make wise choices," says the Dean. "Expect to be confused at first; things will fall into place, usually within 10 days."~ Above all, she advises the freshmen to learn to "stand alone." There is no one to decide for you here. It is your duty and responsibility to yourself to de cide for yourself. Miss Clotworthy also advocates a good laugh, at yourself, situa tions, and things in general. "Laugh at least once every hour," she says. "It makes problems seem smaller." Personal Counsel Freshmen need a better system of counseling. Dean Clotworthy has expressed her wish that she could personally talk with each of the girls. And 3he sincerely hopes that any of the girls will feel free to come bo her at any time. There is a possibility of there :eing a "psychological counsel ing" service soon, directed by the 3chool of Education. M a n y ichools have these services al ready. Carolina Spirit As to the orientation program )ean Clotworthy has this opinion: 'This year is truly outstandingl rhe program is instilling the true ipirit of Carolina into the stu lents!" She especially pointed >ut the abundance of Rat Caps )eing worn. "It is up to the upper-classmen ;o ke this spirit alive." This is Mrs. Sumwalt's fir year on campus, having mov onto the Horseshoe this past Ju upon appointment of her husbai to the presidency. Dean Ck worthy has been with us for thr years now, a very friendly ai efficient lady. The articles published here a to give an introduction of t ladies of the campus to all ne students of Carolina. As this Mrs. Sumwalt's first appearan on the scene as First Lady, pe haps the students would like meet her . . . via the article. Of course, Mrs. Sumwalt is e ready known to some of us, i her husband was the Dean i Engineering here before becor ing president. SUMWALT, welcomes incoming students fi w drop-in held at the President's I is r Carolina's F Makes 'Homf By MARGARET SCOTT ts Society Editor A Carolina has a new First I- Lady, a very charming and gracious lady who now resides m on the campus in the President's House. It's good to have some one in the place again! She and g President Sumwalt moved into w their new home in June. ts Mrs. Robert L. Sumwalt loves it the Carolina campus with its ;s beautiful Horseshoe; and most of all, she enjoys having the young people around again. She missed them during the summer. "The campus seemed so bare without them," she smiled. Future Gamecocks Mrs. Sumwalt is a native of South Carolina and has lived on Sweetbriar Road in Columbia for many years. She and her hus band have two children, both of whom attended Carolina. Their son, Bobby, was president of the student body while he was here. There are three grandchildren, all future Gamecocks! They love to come to visit here, enjoy play ing on the campus. Nothing like a youthful spirit to liven up the Horseshoe! Adept Decorator Carolina's First Lady has a deep affection for the school. She says, "Carolina has a fine school spirit!" It's good to hear this opinion after all the com ments to the contrary. ' She is quite adept at decorat ing, as many of you will notice in Wade Hampton. She has helped to make the new dormi tory a very beautiful place. Throughout her home, there are many Gamecock statuettes, giv ing an air of elegance to the old home. House to Home It is the sincere desire of our new First Lady that the students feel welcome. The President's House is always open. She hopes that the students will -feel free to drop in any time. Mrs. Sumwalt is destined to do a fine job in her new role.
