Camp By Emily McCutchenx Editor's Note: This is the sixth in a series of articles. PI BETA PHI On April 28, 1867, twelve young women founded I. C. Sorosis, the first national fra ternity for women, at Monmouth -College, Monmouth, Illinois. In 1888 the name was officially changed to Pi Beta Phi. The second chapter was organ ized at Iowa Wesleyan Univer sity in 1869. From one chapter with 12 young women, the sor ority has grown to an interna tional sorority with 101 chapters, 265 alumnae clubs, and over 60,000 initiates. The constitution was written in 1867. In 1890, Alpha Beta, Gamma and Delta .provinces were estab lished and the fraternity con tinued with these four provinces until 1912 when Epsilon and Zeta were added. SEVEN NATIONAL soror ities joined together with Pi P1hi in 1882 to begin an inter fraternity organization. In May, 1902 -the National Panhellenic Conference became an actively working group designed to band sororities together. The South Carolina Alpha was founded on October 9, 1931. This chapter is in Eta Province along with the North Carolina, Ken tucky, and Tennessee chapters. This year, the South Carolina Alpha won the Eta Province scholarship improvement award. Now the wine carnation and colors of wine and blue are a part of the University of South Carolina and a vital part. Re ferring to personal conduct, "Every act of yours will reflect either credit or discredit upon your fraternity sisters." "THE SOCIAL atmosphere of a Pi Phi house should reflect the warmth of hospitality, and the good manners of its members." This has always been the atti tude of every Pi Phi on the campus. They have worn the colors of wine and blue and the Arrow with credit. Pi Phi presents many awards to the members of the national group. Among these are the Ruth Barrett Smith Scholarship. Harriet Rutherford Johnstone Scholarship, the Balfour Cup Award presented to the chapter which best meets its responsib ilities to its college, itself, and its national fraternity, Na tional Scholarship Plaque, Adda Prentice Williams Award and Amy Burnham Onken Award. To each pledge, upon activa tion, wvho has maintained a high scholastic average receives the scholarship pin wvhich is a mini atuire of the Arrow. BIENNIALLY, PT PHI enter tains at the A rrowv Ball. A t Christmas, they have an informal dance and spend a day wvith the Orphanage children, giving at ten,tion and gifts to those who really need it. Pi Phi celebrates its founding with a Founder's Day Dinner. On October 19, 1850, the Alpha Chapter was instituted at the University of Pennsylvania. The chapter established the Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell prize in English Literature at the University of Pennsylvania in 1888. This was probably the first scholastic award offered by a fraternity in any American college or university, and its ac ceptance by the University of Pennsylvania represented the first official recognition of fra ternities of that institution. The Sub-Epsilon Chapter was established for the purpose of I providing an opportunity for brothers wearing the blue and the gray to mingle socially within t the bonds of the Fraternity. THE RECORDS of this early alumni group relate how Confe derate Phi Kaps were cleared t through the Union lines in order that they might dine and dance with their northern "enemy" brothers at the St. Nicholas Hotel in Cumberland. On May 4, 1901, Alpha Eta Chapter was founded at the Uni versity of South Carolina. Some of the others in this section are located at the University of Ala bama, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, t Duke University, and the Uni versity of North Carolina. The Carolina chapter of Phi K{ap has been quite active in elec tions, often winning leading posi tions. PII KAIP has placed in Song Fest many times in a row, and have many active members in Omicron Delta Kappa. Every two years, Phi Kappa Sigma entertains at the Black and Gold Formal Dance, at which time the officers and dates are honored as well as other mem bers of the fraternity. Mr. Mitchell designed the pin ] which has changed very little since. It is a Maltese Cross sup porting the six-pointed star, the letters 'hi, Kappa and Sigma, 1 and the Skull and Iones. * * * SIGMA DELTA TAU Sigma Delta Tau was founded at Cornell University on March 25, 1917 by seven young women. In organizing the fraternity and in formulating its ideals and am bitions, the founders were aided by Nathan Caleb House, ritual ist who is affectionately known as " Brother Nat." The official badge is a jeweled torch. Five pearls adorn the crossbar of the torch and one the handle. Above the five pearls are the Greek letters for Sigma D elta Taui. A diamond brightens the flame. The s(Irority colors are Cafe an lait and old blue anid the flow er is the Golden Tiea Rose. At p)resent there are 27 ehapters and ;,853 members. Each chapter is en itled to two votes and to send wo official delegates. THE NATIONAL sorority nesents awards to the chapters or scholarship, activities and >hilanthropic work. Some of hese are the Scholarship Plaque wesented to all chapters placing irst on their cahipus and Ac ivities Plaque given to the hapter whose members partic pate in the most important ampus honor societies. Also the Torch Award given o the chapter whose material ubmitted to Torch magazine the ditor judges most correctly sub itted; and the Philanthropic ward which goes to the chapter iarticipating in the finest local >hilanthropic work. SOME CHAPTERS award a lest Pledge Cup to the one girl n each pledge class who is voted he best pledge. The present fraternity has 37 ictive chapters with a total niem wrship of over 11,500. The first three chapters, City ollege, Columbia and Cornell, )perated more or less indepen lently until on December 29, 1911, a small group of alumni in wd around New York City de .ided that systematic control and 1rowth were essential to the stablishment of a real National Fraternity.
