DELTA ZETA On October 24, -1902 Julia Bishop, Mary Collins, Anna Keen, Alfa Lloyd, Mabelle Minton, and Anne Simmons presented Delta Zeta as a sorority to the Univer Aity of Miami in-Oxford, Ohio. Some young imen of the school of that day made their way to ward the secretary of the sorority and snatched the constitution right out of her hand, running madly down the street they found themselves pursued by the Uni versity President Dr. Benton, who recovered the constitution and returned it to the young lady. He was declared to be the Grand Patron of the sorority. On Octolber 28, '1928, the Kil larney Rose, the diamond, and the colors of Old Rose and Vieux Green joined allegiance as Beta Delta chapter of Delta Zeta Na tional Sorority. DELTA ZETA is the largest national sorority with 126 active chapters, 152 alumni chapters and a membership of 44,000 young ladies. Each year an award is given in honor of a Carolina Delta Zeta past president, Nell B. Miller for high scholastic average. This award is presented to a young lady on awards day from the School of Education who has maintained the highest scholastic standards. The national magazine is called the LAMP. Some of the ideals of a member are to learn to live with and to understand others; to enrich and sweeten the life of all through lasting friendships; and to practice the art of gracious liv ing. Some of the prominent Delta Zeta's are Gloria Swanson, Gail Patrick (director of the Perry Mason Television series), Crown Princess Martha of Norway, the wife of the Governor of Oregon, and the wife of the Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana. * * * KAPPA SIGMA In 1400 at the University odf Bologna a society was organized for mutual protection against the Governor of the City of Bologna. A few prominent families of Italy aided the group in their growth and one permitted the Society the use of its Family Crest to be the visible sign used by the group. On December 10, 1869, this So ciety now known as Kappa Sigma came to the United States and became a part of the University of Virginia as the Zeta chapter. A t one time or another there have been 151 chapters. On April 24, 1890 Chi Omega chapter 'became a vital link of the University of South Carolina. It was the ~37th chapter organ ized in the United States. "Its oath was only the putting into words the vows already written upon the hearts of the Founders." The offi cers in the fraternity are Grand Master, Grand Procurator, Grand Master of Ceremonies, Grand Scribe, Grand Treasurer and two Guards. The Alumni chapters are found in many cities through out the U. S. The Caduceus is the fraternity magazine. Annually, Kappa Sigma has honored a member who has achieved fame in industry, the arts, science, government or other fields, whose accomplishments have honored the fraternity-this award is known as the Man of the Year Award. IN 1946 the Fraternity inau gurated the &Sholarship-Leader ship Award Program. This pro gram was conceived to encourage each pledge and act.ive member in the Fraternity to do his best work during his college career. The awards are made to seniors using grades and honors secured in the first three years.
