DELTA DELTA DELTA
In 1888, at Boston University,
Boston, Massachusetts, Sarah Ida
3haw, Eleanor Dorcas Pond,
Florence Isabelle Stewart and
[sabel Morgan Breed founded
Delta Delta Delta.
In 1923, the colors of silver,
gold, and cerulean blue, the
pansy, and the pearl became a
part of the University of South
Carolina as the Alpha Lambda
chapter of Delta Delta Delta.
Tri Delta traditionally presents
many awards for outstanding
performance in various fields.
One of these, the Leadership
Award, is given to the member
of a collegiate chapter who has
shown outstanding leadership.
The recipient of the award re
ceives a piece of silver, and the
chapter enjoys for a year the use
of a beautiful silver tray and
punch bowl.
Among the activities partici
pated in by the members are the
Pine party, A p p I e Polishing
party, P a n s y breakfast and
Founders day. The Pine parties
are Christmas parties given by
the alumni for the collegiates.
The pledges entertain the actives
with a show and comical gifts,
and a poem depicting each indi
vidual girl is exchanged around
the Christmas tree.
The Apple Polishing party is
given to show appreciation to
the individual professors invited
by the members. The Pansy
breakfast, originating in 1927, is
almost a national event each year.
A ring, made of pansies, large
enough to step through is a dis
tinctive feature of the breakfast.
Founders Day is celebrated
each Thanksgiving with an in
spirational banquet to which all
alumnae are Invited.
The Convention is the supreme
governing body of the fraternity.
It meets in the even numbered
years. Members choose delegates
who represent -them at the con
vention and through them have a
voice in the government of the
fraternity.
Parties are given for under
privileged children, there is par
ticipation in clean-up drives,
work on local campaigns for na
tional service organizations, such
as the Red Cross.

boys as brave as brave can be,

they said 'We'll get together and
call ourselves K A's.'"
This is the song in the hearts
of all Kappa Alpha's both here
and elsewhere as they leave col
lege to go into all the phases of
life.
In 1881, Rho Ohapter of the
Kappa Alpha Order brought the
colors of crimson and old gold to
the University of South Carolina.
Each year, the KA's of Graves
Province, the province including
the University, Wofford and
other surrounding colleges and
universities, ceremonfously se
cedes from the Union on the State
House steps, and from there, pro
ceed to enjoy a weekend of
Kappa Alpha Order fellowship,
dressed in appropriate costumes
of pre-War of Northern Aggres
sion. At this time, the KA with
the best beard is given recogni
tion.
Kappa Alpha plays host each
year to the student body and
alumni at the traditional Tea
Dance, a big feature each year
during the Clemson - Carolina
holidays.
Last spring, KA was awarded
the Inter - Fraternity Council
scholarship trophy. This makes
the third consecutive year the
chapter has received this award.
A toast is given to General
Robert E. Lee and is called the
Convivium. This is a tribute to
General Lee and is usually a fea
ture held each year.
Every year, the Rho Chapter
of Kappa Alpha Order gives a
Christmas party for the orphans
at the Carolina Ohildren's Home.
At this time, present Carolina
students share with Carolina stu
dents of tomorrow, maybe, gifts
and joy that comes along with
the celebration of Christmas day,
which otherwise may not have
been such a happy occasion for
these children.
