Host To Art
Of Waddill
A two-week exhibition of art
works by John Miller Waddill Jr.
has just opened in Russell House
Assembly Room and will continue
through Saturday, March 14.
The exhibit is the third of four
scheduled d u r i n g the current
school year under the sponsorship
of the department of fine arts.
Prof. Edmund Yaghjian is head
of the department.
Waddill studied at Furman Uni
versity, Burnsville Painting School,
and Parsons School of Design,
from which he graduated with
honors. He has designed wallpaper
for Katzenbach & Warren and
fabrics for Scott Wilson & F.
Foord.
A participant in exhibitions of
the Guild of S. C. Artists, Waddill
has won awards at Winston-Salem,
N. C., Gallery of Fine Arts, The
Little Gallery, Bertha Schafer
Gallery in New York City, and the
Columbia Biennial in 1957.
His work has appeared in sev
eral one-man shows.

Poetry Contest
Euphrosynean Literary Society
is sponsoring a poetry contest
again this year, according to Bar
bara Blair. Any student may enter,
and he may contribute as many
poems as he wishes. They may be
of any length and on any subject.
They must be typewritten and
in post office bov 313, campus (in
care of Barbara Blair), by Mon
day, April 20. All students are in
vited to participate, she said. The
winner will be announced on
Awards Day.
SC Holds
Engineering
Convention
Fourteen of the Southeast's
largest colleges and universities
will be represented at the South
eastern Regional Conference of
student chapters of the American
Institute of Chemical Engineers
which meets at the University
Wednesday through Friday, March
18-20.
Representatives from Auburn,
Georgia Tech, N. C. State, Clem
son, Tulane, Virginia Polytechnic,
Mississippi State, Kentucky, Van
derbilt and the universities of
Florida, Mississippi, Alabama and
Tennessee will attend the confer
ence.
This marks the first year the
University chapter will be host for
this annual meeting since joint
ing the AIChE some 10 years ago.
During the three-day meeting
the expected 300 participants are
scheduled to hear from speakers
representing technical, professional
and industrial organizations in
addition to lectures and presentta
tion of student papers by each
chapter.
Officers of the University chap
ter are Charles Cash, president;
Harold Sturm, vice-president; Joe
McElroy, secretary; and Bob Po
teat, treasurer.
Fall Scholarships

Two $100 language scholat-ships
for the fall semester were an
nounced today by Prof. R. M.
Stephan, head of the department
of foreign languages..
A $100 scholarship will be
awarded to one of the winners of
the High School French Contest
conducted by the American Asso
ciation of Teachers of French. A
second $100 scholarship will be
awarded to one of the winners of
the Spanish contest held under the
auspices of the American Associ
ation of Teachers of Spanish and
Portuguese.
