ing with monaural and stereo
phonic sound systems.
The heart of your sound sys
tem is your power amplifier.
Some amplifiers can produce
only a narrow band of tones,
over emphasize the lower tones,
over emphasize the higher tones,
or some emphasize tones un
evenly.
Full Band Width
When an amplifier cannot
bring you the "full band width"
not only do you lose tones, but
frequently false tones are gener
ated when notes above and below
the amplifier range try to crowd
in.
Distortion occurs when the
amplifier cannot bring you an
exact reproduction of the original
sound. "Distortion" may be di
vided into two types -- harmonic
and intermodulation - bosh of
which can be accurately meas
ured.
Harmonic Distortion
Harmonic distortion is not a
direct measure of the listening
dissatisfaction that will be pro
duced, but it can be a useful and
convenient indication.
When harmonic distortion is
less than one percent at full
power over the entire 20 to 20,000
cycle tone range, then the iUter
modulation distortion in an am
plifier is also less than one per
cent over the same tone and
power range.
Amplifiers
Amplifiers can produce dis
cordant tones in the bass portion t
