During the course of every institution's athletic develop
ment there is one man who stands out among all others as
the physical and spiritual leader of that movement.
This week we would like to pay due tribute to such a
man, who for the past several decades has contributed 100
per cent of himself toward that phase of Carolina's expan
sion.
Athletic Director
At present Rex Enright is serving the University in the
capacity of athletic director. But for many years he was
known as "Coach" Enright, head mentor of the Gamecocks'
gridiron forces.
During this time the men who knew him the best, his
players, were living proof of the fact that, besides being an,
excellent strategist, he was also a great moral influence.
It can truthfully be said that Coach Enright has never
refused to help in any way an athlete who would meet him
half way.
Personal Gain Never An Object
Never in his career was personal gain the object or moti
vation for his actions either on or off the field. Moreover,
it was his constant concern for the welfare of his players
that caused him to be one of the best liked and most thought
of coaches in America.
There have been many case's where he has extended help
to deserving athletes in the face of personal loss.
For it is his critrion that intercollegiate sports competi
tion is of secondary importance where physical and mental.
development are concerned and not merely a feeder system
for the professional sports world.
We Salute You
Our hats are off to you, Coach Enright, for a difficult
job well done, and to assure you that your labor was not a 1
thankless one, for you helped put our school on the map.

It has been rumred that Columbia will definitely have
completed, an all purpose colloseum fashioned much in the
manor of Charlotte's Municipal Hall.
This will provide the University with more than adequate'
facilities to entertain the nation's best basketball teams. I

A great deal of improvement can be expected of the Uni- 1
versity's track team this year.
Coach Weems Baskins has on his squad four men capable I
of competing on the national level. This includes David i
Coats, shotput; Don Goodroe, hurdles; and Billy Latham,
distance runner.
Sophomore Paul Mason, ineligible this year because he
transfered from Abilene Christian, will compete in the three 1
mile event.
