Coach Looks
For Change
From Past
Carolina's Gamecocks opened
their first basketball season under
head coach Walter Hambrick at
8 o'clock Wednesday night against -
Wofford in the .USC field hous:0
(Results of this game were not
available at press time.)
The Gamecocks, blessed with a
large returning group of letter
men, figure to be slightly im
proved over last year's team which
won five and lost 19.
Leading the Gamecocks will be
guard and captain Ray Pericola, a
second-team All-Atlanta Coast
choice last winter and one oif the
league's leading scorers with a 15.1
average.
With Pericola in the Gamecock
lineup will be forwards Walt Hud
son and Mike Callahan, center
Fred Lentz and guard Melvin
Quick. The only non-letterman in
the lineup is Quick, who starred
for North Greenville Junior Col- ,5
lege last season.
Other lettermen available to
Hambrick are forward Fred Luigs,
forward-center Bob Frantz, center
Larry Dial. Another letterman,
guard Dickie Prater, won't be
available for about a month be
cause of an injured ankle.
The-Gamecocks have pretty good
height but may lack speed and out
side shooting accuracy.
Wofford, entering its first year
under ex-USC star Gene Alexander,
is led by forward Marshall Perkins,
who averaged 16.2 points per game
last season. Alexander coached at
Brskine last winter.
Other main line players for the
Terriers are center Bob Jenkins,
forwards Trap Hart and Bill Bar
bee and guards Bill Bradford and
Bill Tinder.
