The reaction of over 2,000 fans
at a recent "dress rhearsal"
scrimmage for Carolina's Game
cocks indicated that one of the
team's newcomers could prove to
be a real crowd-pleaser.
Dick (Buddy) Bennett, a sopho
more quarterback from Jesup, Ga.,
provided quite a few thrills for
the spectators during the final
public outing before the Game
cocks' season-opener against Duke
here Saturday night.

The Blue Devils will likely hold

or passing.
Duke has its Wray Carlton
George Dutrow combination con
sidered by their coach, Bill Mur
ray, the best in the nation.
Both teams boast stout lines
that are saturated with experience.
The Gamecock forward wall is
led by tackles Don Rogers and
Ed Pitts, a senior and junior of all
star potential.
Duke's most-publicized lineman
is guard Mike McGee, a standout
in the Orange Bowl game against
Oklahoma last January and a fu
ture All-America hopeful.
Quarterback experience is in
abundance on the two teams, with
Bob Brodhead leading the Duke
attack, while Bobby Bunch en
gineers the South Carolina offense.
The Gamecocks and Blue Devils
were noted for their ground at
tacks last fall, but both have
hinted that they'll have some new
twists in their offensive strategy
for 1958.
A crowd of near 40,000 is ex
pected for the game, but tickets
will be available right up until
kickoff time.
The USC ticket office announced
today that no more mail orders
will be accepted for the game
in spite of the fact that sales
have been tremendous to date.
In fact, according to ticket man
ager Roger White yesterday the
Gamecock office sold 1,000 tickets
to the Duke opener.
The office also says that 500
"knot-hole" tickets will be sold
Saturday for 49 cents to kids un
der 14 years old. Also regular
tickets will be available at the
stadium that night.
As further indication of Duke's
possible strength, one North Caro
lina newspaper took a poll of
ACC writers and Duke was named
by the majority of journalists to
win the conference championship.
It's almost impossible to name
a starting lineup for the Game
cocks when they take the field
offensively against Blue Devils
Saturday night. However, it can
be narrowed down to some de
gree.
Jimmy Duncan, Bucky Walker,
Weems Baskin and Eddie Beall
are still fighting for the end spots,
Don Rogers will be one of the
tackle starters while Ed Pitts
and John Kompara are fighting
for the other berth. Corky Gaines
and Jimmy Merck appear starters
right now at guards but Jake
Bodwin and Jack Ashton are clos
ing in. Dwight Keith and Lawton
Rogers are neck and neck at
center.
Bobby Bunch and Buddy Bennett
are still waging an all-out war for
the starting QB spot but the other
three first unit backfield positions
appear set with Alex Hawkins and
King Dixon at halfback and John
Saunders at fullback.
