Naughty - x\ x y -: ~ PoTheeSs' BelovedoLooIers Holds Annual D JJt The Paddocks GAMECOCK PICTURE STORY By Jim Herring (Photos by Harry Mooney and Ed Martin) The Twelfth Annual Sigma Chi Derby got under way at 4 p.m., April 23 on the Horseshoe. Presiding stewards were Bob McNair, Allen Johnson and Mike Quinn. The judges were Acting President and Mrs. Robert Sumwalt, Dean Elizabeth Clotworthy, Dr. J. T. Penney, Dean George Buchanan, Dr. W. T. Batson and Coach Warren Giese. Offi ciating as starter was Rex Enright. The festivities started with the parade of the sponsors led by Miss Nancy Estridge, the reigning Miss Venus, and the coverted Bronze Derby. The weather was perfect and the entries were chaffing at the bit. The highlight of the afternoon was the Miss Venus Contest in which the beauties are judged on Flanks and Shanks. After much deliberation the judges decided that Miss Nancy Hiller of Kappa Delta was the filly with the best figure. Music, Man Music during intermissions were provided .by Bert Pooser and his beloved Loosers. The Derby officials were Bill Handel, Derby Chairman; Charlie Way, Business Man ager; Johnny Hagins, Clerk of Scales; Jim Herring, George Leventis and Bob Withers, Handicappers; and our able veterinarian was Dr. "Zeus" Anderson. The winner of this year's Sigma Chi Derby in a neck and neck finish was Chi Omega, heatedly pursued by Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Delta. The day's events were climaxed by a Sink or Swim party at Gibsons and the mad rush back to Columbia with the Hospitality Wagon. The next evening came the drop-in and the Sweetheart Ball held in the Wade Hampton from 9 till 1 with the music of Jimmy Farr and his orchestra. Richie Hoffman and Jim Sherer were presented with this year's best pledge pins; John Dross and Roger Knapper won the Best Scholarship cups; John Gordon, Cudgie Anders son and Alec Brown received the athletic participation awards; Jerry Bauknight, Roger Knapper and Allen John son received the Grand Consuls citations; Allen Johnson. received the Outstanding Active Award and trophy; and it was announced that Bob McNair was one of the finalists for the National Balfour award. The peak of the evening was reached when the door of * the Sweetheart Cross opened to reveal the new Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, Mary Jo Upchurch. erby Day II I V Wheee! A Winner!
