Thompson Is NAWmed Instructor Jack M. Thompson, Jr., has been designated as instructor in history for the University lxtension Cen ter in Florence by Dr. R. H. Wien efeld, Dean of the College of Arts and Science, according to Dr. Nicholas P. Mitchell, director of the Exteusion Division. Mr. Thompson, graduate fellow at the University and candidate for the degree of Doctor of Phil osophy, has been appointed for the academic year 1958-59. Mr. Thompson earned the A. B. degree in 1949' and the Master of Education degree in 1958 from the University of South Carolina and has been lengaged in study toward the doctorate since the fall of 1954. He has completed all class room work and examinations, and will receive the Ph.D. at com mencement on M.y 80. Mr. Thompson His doctoral dissertation is on "James R. Garfield: The Career of a Progressive, 1895-1916." The son of President Garfield, James R. Garfield was a leader in the Progressive Party and was Secre tary of the Interior in Theodore Roosevelt's cabinet. Garfield was Civil Service Com missioner and was first Commis sioner of Corporations in the De partment of Commerce and Labor. The Garfield family papers in Washington, D. C., have been made available for Thompson's research on the subject. From 1950 through 1954, Mr. Thompson taught history in Eau Claire High School. A veteran of World War II, he served in the army from March,' 1943 to Jan uary, 1946, being discharged as a sergeant. Players Set Two More Productions "A Phoenix T Frequent" and "27 Wagons F of Cotten," both one-act plays, S& tentatively scheduled for presentation May 7-8 in the Warehouse Theatre am the University Players' last pro ductions of the year. The cast of "A Phoenix Too Fre quent," by Ohristopher Fry, will include Newton Neely as "Tegeus," Cynthia Gilliam as "Dyamane," and Jo Allen Bradham as "Doto." It will be directed by Jimmy Quick. Tennessee Williams' play, "27 Wagons Full of Cotton," directed by Charles Blackwell,' also has a cast of three. They are Phyllis Hubbard as "Flora Meigham," Clarence Felder as "Jake Meig ham," and Mickey Rasheed as "Silva' Vucaro." The controversial movie, "Baby Doll," was based on this play according to Blackwell. Both directors are former U.S.C. students and honorary members of the University Players, in whose productions they have often ap peared. Quick was last seen as the Mayor in the Players' Production of "The Lady's Not For Burning," which was written by the same playwright as "A Phoenix .Too Frequent." The paper is the result of a study of a tract of virgin forest in Berkeley County, and deals with the state's areas of original vege tations, the discovery of the tract, the results of a floristic analysis including the species present as well as their abundance and role in the community, timber produc tion figures on a recently har vested portion, and comments on the future of the still-existing forest. Ochs, pro fessor of history, and Dr. James A. Morris, professor of economics. In addition to the staff of three, the American Studies Insti .Dr. Ferreli tute will have guest lecturers from government and academic life to participate in the program through lectures and discussions. The summer institute is en dowed by the Coe Foundation, created by the late William Rob ertson Coe to assist colleges and universities .in establishing sum mer refresher courses in American studies for selected teachers and professors. Financial assistance is available for qualified sociat studies teach ers in the amount of $75 for one course or $150 for both. Prefer ence will be given to scholarship applicants who wish to take both courses. The American Studies Institute, being administered by Professor Ochs, will be patterned after the first such summer course estab lished in 1952 at the University of Wyoming. It is expected that the Coe Foundation will continue its aid to U.S.C. Doctor Ferrell is the author of two books on American diplomatic history, "Peace In Their Lives," and "American Diplomacy In The Great Depression." He is pres ently engaged in finishing a text book in diplomatic history to be published in 1959. He has won two outstanding prizes, the John Adidson Porter Prize at Yale and the George Louis Beer Prize of the American His torical Association.
