Mike Callahan, a six-foot, six inch Irishman from Sussex, N. J., has earned a starting berth for Carolina's Gamecocks with a wil lingness to battle for rebounds with the best of 'em and consistency in point-making. Callahan couldn't play on his high school basketball team during his junior and senior years because his family moved twice and he was inligible under a "transfer rule" in that state. However, he received comparable experience in an ama teur league. As a Carolina freshman he aver aged 20 points per game as a cen ter, but his physical equipment is better suited to forward in var sity competition. Mike made a good impression early, hitting 13 points against Georgia Tech and 16 against North Carolina. A 17-point per formance against Duke in a 62-51 upset further solidified his posi tion. Besides showing fair consistency in scoring, Callahan has been the team rebounding leader, averaging 7.2 per game, although he has spent considerable' time on the bench. In scoring he has compiled 135 points for an 8.4 average to rank third on the team behind Dickie Prater's 15.3 pace and All-Atlantic Coast candidate Cookie Pericola's 14.3. He really hasn't been able to swim for any records yet, as we have had to save him for the relay. All he's been doing is to swim to win." WHAT IS A CHIN STRAP? ieg_t sMOK Coates Is An Olympic Prospect Carolina's young Olympic shot put prospect, Dave Coates, and At. lantic Coast Conference cross country champ, Billy Latham, will be entered in the National A.A.U. Indoor track championships in New York's Madison Square Garden on Feb. 22, Athletic Director Rex Enright said today. Coates, a sophomore from Cul peper, Va., will be representing Carolina for the first time, but he has already indicated that he will be the school's top all-time shot putter. In his lone "official" competition outdoors last spring he placed second to Georgia Tech's great Fred Berman in the Georgia A.A.U. meet with a throw of 53 feet, 11 inches. "I think Coates is definitely an Olympic prospect," says track coach Weems Baskin. "He's on his way up, while the country's best shot put men right now are much older than Coates." Latham, a junior from Colum bia, established himself as a threat in the A.C.C. distance races by winning the league cross-country title in the fall. He'll enter the three-mile event in New York. He ran the mile and two-mile on the Gamecock team last spring, post ing times under the 9:50 mark. Baskin added, "Our main pur pose for sending these boys to the indoor meet is to give them val uable exp&rience against the best in the country." Both Coates and Latham shoula be championship threats in the an nual A.C.C. indoor meet at Chapel Hill, N. C., on March 1. They will be challenged by the sharpshooting of Clemson's Vince Yockel and Ed Brinkley in Thurs day night's game, and again Sat urday when the Deaes' Wendell Carr and Olin Broadway become their main opponents. The probable starting lineup for the Gamecocks will be Dickie Pra ter and Cookie Pericola at guards, Fred Lentz at center, and Mike Callahan and Dick Hoffman at the forward spots. Clemson's starting five will probably be Ed Brinkley and Vince Yockel, guards, Walt Gibbons, cen ter, and Doug Hoffman and George Krajack, forwards. The Gamecocks are hoping that Fred Lentz can put to good use his height advantage over Gibbons. Lentz is 6'8", and Gibbons is 6'7". The Birds will also have the height advantage over Coach Bones McKinney's Deacons. However, the Deacons also have a 6'8" center, John Reed, who will be pressed into action if their rebounding isn't up to par. Game time at the Field House next Saturday night will be 8:15.
