IN THE
BIRD CAGE.
With spring football practice starting just eight days
from now, Head Coach Warren Giese seems all set with his
staff.
The announcement earlier this week that Leo Cahill has
been hired to fill the remaining staff vacancy should wrap
things up for Giese.
Cahill, a graduate of the University of Illinois, was line
coach at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, in 1956
and 1957. It is not known whether Cahill will become fresh
man coach or a varsity assistant. About Cahill, Coach Giese
says that he has "been impressed with his knowledge of
football, and I know that he will be a valuable addition to
the staff."
The hiring of Cahill completes the staff which has been
left short-handed by two when Coaches Billy Henderson and
Leo Mahoney resigned last month. The other new coach Is
Jack Scarbath, former All-American quarterback at -Mary
land. It now appears that the rumors concerning Coach
Marvin Bass moving to Virginia as head coach were false.
Neither of the new coaches have checked. in yet, but both
are expected to be on hand for the opening of spring drills,
only eight days away. Giese himself has just gotten back
from a "talent hunt" up New York and New Jersey way.
Most of the players have already been working out for
some time now in an effort to get in top shape by the time
the first whistle blows. Competition for positions should
be keen with many good players back from last year's varsity
and a good looking freshman crop coming up.
Heading the list of returnees that will greet Coach Giese
next week are such proven veterans as King Dixon, Alex
Hawkins, Lawton Rogers, Don Rogers, John Kompara, Bobby
Bunch, Stan Spears, Eddie Beall, and Dwight Keith. Still,
even with this strong group coming back, guys like Julius
Derrick, Tommy Addison, Nelson Weston, Frank Destino,
and Don Johnson will be sorely missed.
After compiling a 7-3 record in his first year as head
oach at Carolina, Giese (or rather the team) slipped to 5-5
last year. Giese has come into considerable disfavor from
some of the local scribes and spectators for his control brand
of football, and it will be interesting to note any new element
he may or may not introduce for next fall.
At any rate it looks like the Gamecocks may be in for
a pretty good season. They seem 'to have the basic ingre
dients, a top-notch coach, good assistants, and a wealth of
returning players.
To say that the Gamecocks haven'.t been too successful
on the basketball court this season is probably the under
statement of the year. The following letter reached our
desk earlier this week. This being about the tenth of its
kind, we decided to go ahead and publish it. You can draw
your own conclusions about its content, but it will probably
make interesting reading.
Dear Sports Editor:
I think it is about time someone tried to find the
flaw in our highly potential, and I do mean potential
because it is never kinetic, basketball team.
People often ask why the student body does not
cheer the b)oys when they get behind. The answer is
this: Have you ever tried to cheer a horse to run faster
when he doesn't even look like he wants to walk? This
uninspired attitude of the basketball team is the same
attitude the boys had in a practice session that I wit
nessed.
I am now going to be a witness against the inflictor
of this vile attitude, Frank Johnson.
Johnson said earlier in the season that he had a lot
of good material to work with and I heartily agr-ee on
this statement. This material, I think, is the best that
Johnson has had to work with. The team is well infested
with good basketball players. All they need is a good
leader!
Another statement made by Coach Jolmson is one
I think utterly stupid. Several weeks ago in the Colum
bia Record, he had this to say, and I quote, "I would like
to play the sophomores more hut the experience they'd
get this season probably would hurt them more than it
would help them."
I have never seen experience hurt a basketbali
player. To learn how to play the game you first have to
become a part of one. You can't learn how to mend the
faults that you commit if you are not given time to
cope with such a problem.
How can these sophomores ever learn how to make

Illinois Native
A native of Utica, Illinois,
Cahill .is expected to be here in
time for "spring" football prac
tices for the Gamecocks which
open February 22.
Cahilli, after graduation from
Illinois, went into service in 1951
and was a non-com in the First
Cavalry division in Korea. He
first met Giese when the USC
head coach was lecturing at a
coaching school in Japan.

About Cahill, Giese said, "I
have seen Leo at various coaching
clinics in the past few years and
talked with him. I have been im
pressed with his knowledge of
football, and I know that he will
be a valuable addition to the
staff."
Cahill played center on the La
Salle-Peru High School team in
Utica and was named to the all
state team in 1945. He went to
Illinois in 1946 and made the
varsity squad as a freshman. He
says he is the only frosh to make
the trip to play UCLA in the
1947 Rose Bowl game.
The new assistant -Carolina
coach hurt his knee during his
first year of football for the Illini
and didn't get to play during the
1947 -season but he did play in
'48, '49 and '50. He was the regu
lar center for the last two years.
Made All-Stars
In 1950 Cahill made the Chi
cago Tribune's All-Midwest team
and was fifth in the voting in
the United Press All-America poll.
He also played in the Blue-Gray
game at Mobile, Ala. in 1950.
After obtaining his Bachelor of
Science degree in Physical educa
tion he went into service after
which he was discharged in 1953
and became freshman coach at his
alma mater, the University of Illi
nois.
In 1954 and '55, Cahill was head
line coach at Lewis College In
Lockport, Ill. and for the past
two years he has been line coach
at the University of Toledo.
Is Married.
Cahill has a boy 20 months old
but they are execting' another
baby in about a month. Although
he will be here in time for the
spring workouts his wife may
have to come later.
When the Gamecocks open prac
tice later this month Giese will
be looking at the nucleus of next
year's varsity squad, the one in
which he'll be trying to better last
year's 5-5 record.
This is the beginning of the
third season for Giese as head
coach at Carolina. He was 7-3 in
a surprising first year here and
5-5 last year which gives him a
current won-lost record for the
Gamecocks of 12-8, a respectable
mark.
