The recent adoption of a grant
in-aid system for the recruiting
of high school athletes by the At,
lantie Coast Conference hasn't
changed Warren Giese's attitude
toward "high pressure."
Giese calmly points out, "We
haven't signed the first boy yet.
In fact, we don't even have a
grant-in-aid form."
No Alarm
He adds quickly that there's no
cause for alarm, if other schools
are "signing-up" outstanding prep
talent. Giese and his assistants
are going about their contacts in
the business-as-usual manner that
netted them one of the finest
freshman crops in the school's
history last fall.
"I think the public In general
has a slight mis-conception of the
grant-nT-aid set-up adopted by
our conference," Giese explains.
"In the first place, the conference
has not issued an official form to

Giese said that he and his staff
have been encouraged by the
number of top-flight prospects ex
pressing an interest in attending
South Carolina.

championship by losing out in the
last few minutes to Duke at Dur
ham. They had previodsly

The Birds have been one of the
most disappointing teams in the
ACC conference this season, hav
ing won only 18 out of 17 games.
They havve produced only one
victory in their last 11 starts.
Johnson has started a total of
10 different players so far this
season in an effort to make the
team "Jell."
However, it looks as if he may
have finally come up with a set
starting line-up since all five
Carolina starters played the whole
game against Duke last Monday
night.
Guards Cookie Pericola and
Dickie Prater, forwards Dick
Hoffman and Milke Callahan, and
center Fred Lents were the "Iron
men" in the Duke game and they
will probably be the starters
against State.
The Wolfpack, coached by
Everette Case, have already
beaten the Gamecocks once this
season.
In Lou Pucillo and Whitey
Bell, the Wolfpack possess two of
the top guards in the conference.
Both are among the top 10 scor
ing leaders in the conference.
John Richter, the only soph to
make the All-Conference team
last year will hold down the cen
ter spot for the Wolfpack. Bob
MqcGillivray and Ken Clark will
probably be the Wolfpack's start
