By JERRY SANDERS Managing Editor When a university really be comes a university, all functions thereof seem to work together to form a good working group, and sports must be included among these functions. Football.began at USC in 1894 with two games on the schedule Georgia and the Augusta YMCA 4 both of which resulted in losses for the home team. The next year, the Gamecocks played .500 ball, beating Furman while losing to Wofford. Neither of these.teams had a coach. That luxury was added in 1896, but it was still a losing season. That year, the Birds lost two games and won one. The first coach for an intercollegiate team at Carolina was W. H. (Dixie) Whaley. (Photo, courtesy USC THIRTEEN TEAMS ENT Intramural Monday In Intramural basketball play in the Independent leagues gets un der way Monday with games scheduled at 6:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Independent teams will play on Monday and Wednes day nights and the fraternity leagues battle on Tuesday, Thurs day, and Friday nights. Thirteen teams are entered in the independent leagues, which will play round-robin schedules. The teams include -Preston first, coached by Frank Destino; Pres ton second, coached by Ron Ja cobs; Preston third, mentored by All-American team and the Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner, fullback Bill Wohrman. Wohrman won the trophy twice. Eight All-Americans At least eight USC players have made All-American. In 1942 Louis Sossamon, center, made the Asso ciated Press second team; in 1946 another center, Bryant Meeks, made the AP second team; Steve Wadiak, halfback, was named on the second teams of the Helms Foundation and Paul Williamson teams in 1951. In 1952 Norris Mullis made the AP second team as a 'defensive halfback. Clyde Bennett, an end, was named to the AP third team in 1953 with Leon Cunningham, center, on the True Magazine first team of that year. Cunningham also made the third teams of NEA and AP in 1954. Frank Minvevich, a 245-pound tackle was named to the Look Magazine first team. Unfortunately the statistical records at Carolina prior to 1950 were not kept as accurately as tihey might have been, but according to available material, Steve Wad iak Is probably the most outstand WICEES NT PUS CO.. Wallace would have won all ca reer records easily had he been eli gible more than two years. His 1,456 two-year point total came within 57 points of surpassing Jim Slaughter's four-year record. It is the second highest mark ever set in major college basketball for performance in the first two years of a career. Play Starts it League . UICHMOND 4, GUOUGIA trates Led A In Sc Lean, lanky Grady Wallace of Mare Creek, Kentucky, is the only All-American basketball player ever produced by the University of South Carolina. The 6'4" Wallace came to Caro lina after two years at Pikeville Junior College in Kentucky. He had been the leading junior college scorer in the nation and he con tinued his high scoring antics at USC. Wallace provided an appropriate climax to his college career last season by being nalned to just about every all-star' team in the country. ' In addition to All-America, Wal lace also garnered many other honors at Carolina. He was se lected to the Associated Press All k"onierence team, the ACC sports writers' team, was proclaimed an Al!-America basketballer in every sense of the word by the South Carolina House of Representatives, led the voting for the all-state poll taken by The Hornet of Furman University, and was chosen Most Valuable Player on the Gamecock FRED Basketbali Independei Walt Carter; Baptist Student Union, whose leader is Jimmy Southern; Naval ROTC, coached by Lt. Gregory, and Steve Abra ham's Coker entry. Also represented in the leagues are Burney, entered by Jimmy Mc Gowen, LeGrande Guerry's "Snakes," Jerry Hornaday's "Vag abonds," ASME, led by Dan Don ovan, ASCE, whose coach is Freddy Spruill, Billy Jackson's Maxey team, and David Hopkins' Harper representative. PiKA, last year's champs, Sigma Chi, Phi Kappa Sigma, and Pi ing football player Carolina has had; however, the present half backs on the Gamecock squad, Alex Hawkins and King Dixon, may change this list of eligibles before the 1958 season Is com pleted. Wadisk Records Wadiak holds the individual rec ords for a single game with most yards rushing (256), most total offense (256), most times rushing (26), longest run Trom scrimmage (96 yards), and is tied with most passes caught during a game (5). Insofar as individual season rec ords are concerned, Wadlak also holds the records for the most yards rushing (998), most total of fense (1,045) and most times rush ing (172). Career.wise, most points scored (150 points), most touch downs scored (25), most touch downs responsibility (run and pass), most yards rushing (2,899) and most times rushing (537). Johnny Gramling has been the top passer in the record books for the Gamecockcs. He set 11 records in this department, including most yards gained by passing, passes attempted and passes completed and most touchdown passes. Gramling's favorite receiver was end Clyde Bennett.
