When a university really be
comes a university, all functions
thereof seem to work together to
form a good working group, and
sports must be included among
these functions.
Football.began at USC in 1894
with two games on the schedule
Georgia and the Augusta YMCA
4 both of which resulted in losses
for the home team. The next year,
the Gamecocks played .500 ball,
beating Furman while losing to
Wofford.
Neither of these.teams had a
coach. That luxury was added in
1896, but it was still a losing
season. That year, the Birds lost
two games and won one. The first
coach for an intercollegiate team
at Carolina was W. H. (Dixie)
Whaley.

As a team, the 1903 squad set

Seven New Marks*
The more recent teams seem to
have done much better in the sta

team, coached by Rex Enright set
at least seven new marks. They

Eight All-Americans
At least eight USC players have
made All-American. In 1942 Louis
Sossamon, center, made the Asso
ciated Press second team; in 1946
another center, Bryant Meeks,
made the AP second team; Steve
Wadiak, halfback, was named on
the second teams of the Helms
Foundation and Paul Williamson
teams in 1951. In 1952 Norris
Mullis made the AP second team
as a 'defensive halfback.
Clyde Bennett, an end, was
named to the AP third team in
1953 with Leon Cunningham,
center, on the True Magazine first
team of that year. Cunningham
also made the third teams of NEA
and AP in 1954. Frank Minvevich,
a 245-pound tackle was named to
the Look Magazine first team.

Grady's assault on the USC
school records leaves his name on
more than half of the major indi
vidual marks. He had near-misses
on the others.
His major school records in
clude:
In a single game-most points
scored, 54 vs. Georgia; most field
goals scored, 20 vs. Georgia; most
free throws scored, 21 vs. Duke;
most free throws attempted, 28 vs.
Duke.
In a season-Most points scored,
906; best scoring average, 81.2;
most field goals, 334; most free
throws scored, 284.
In a career-Best scoring aver
age, 28.0.
Wallace would have won all ca
reer records easily had he been eli
gible more than two years. His
1,456 two-year point total came
within 57 points of surpassing Jim
Slaughter's four-year record. It is
the second highest mark ever set
in major college basketball for
performance in the first two years
of a career.

The 6'4" Wallace came to Caro

Wallace provided an appropriate

In addition to All-America, Wal
