The latest work of John Stein
beck is one in which it is diffi
cult to recognize the brooding au
thor of "Grapes of Wrath" and
"East of Eden." It is an abrupt
departure in both style and lo
cality for the Pulitzer Prize win
ner, but the change is completely
justified. "The Short Reign of
Pippin IV" (Viking Press, 1957)
is a delight to read and must
have been great fun to write. In
a rollicking satire about the re
turn of the nobility to France,
Steinbeck kids just about every
thing and everybody, from Amer
ican movie stars to French
morals.
The story is about Pippin
Arnulf Heristal, a vineyard
owner by trade and amateur as
tionomer by inclination, his dom
inating wife, Marie, and their
charming' but overweight daugh
ter, Clotilde-authoress of "Adieu
Ma Vie," actress, bon vivant, and
Tab Hunter fan.
Pippin the Fourth
In one of the regulaii upheavals
of the French government, a
movement arises to abolish the
Republic and set up a monarchy.
It is discovered that M. Heristal
- is a direct descendant of the an
cient Merovingian rulers, and so,
against his will, the docile as

the Fourth, Monarch of France.
In a fantastic ceremony, complete
with genuine, artificial ermine
capes and Communist-inspired
"Go Home, Napoleon" signs, Pip
pin is crowned and the Heristals
move, from their modest,' third
floor, carriage-house apartment,
into the Palace of Versailles sur
.rounded by 200 of the nobility
who have, unfortunately, lost all
of their royal holdings except
their titles.
Life becomes miserable for Pip
pin. As King, he has no power and
less freedom; however, the pres
tige of~ France grows, loans from
both the United States and Rus
s enrich her treasury, and a
general feeling of prosperity
sweeps the land, so Pippin retains
* his throne in silence.
Finlly, with the aid of a young

of the Egg King of Petaluma,
CalifornIa, Pippin learns to mix
martinis, picks up American
u3aieg, and foinwlates a plan for

Satire
Satire and Humor
Around the plot, Steinbeck has
interwoven brilliant satire, good
natured ridicule, and rare humor.
Scarcely a line of the book fails
to bring a loud guffaw or at least
a smile or two. Steinbeck is par.
.ticularly devastating in his eval
uation of politics and political
parties. There are, for example,
the parties of France: from the
leftist Radical Conservatives and
Conservative Radicals to the Neo
Communist, the Proto-Commu
nist, and the Communists (sub
divided into Stalinists, Trotsky
ists, Khruschchevniks, and Bul
ganinians). Our own Congress
and the British Parliament come
in for their fair share of com
ment and even the Iron Curtain
is no barrier to Steinbeck's wit.
Underlying all sof the comedy,
however, is the warm story of a
simple man who finds . that,
whether king or commoner, the
only way to be a man is to act
like one. -
If you are looking for a good
book to relax with after the strain
of final exams or if you are just
looking for something to laugh
about, "The Short Reign of Pip
pin IV" is a sure bet.

Last week I- had the pleasure
of visiting one of the most popu
lar persons on our campus. To
have been here such a short
while, Dean Clotworthy has cer
tainly made a place for herself
in the hearts of many. Now the
reason for my visit
Last spring, while still bask
ing in the glory of her new glam
our, Sims Dormitory was shocked
to hear sounds of the returned
painters, carpenters, and other
beauticians. By summer their
purpose was clear. Three rooms,
originally the apartment of Mrs.
Childs, former Dean of Women,
were being redecorated for the
new dean.
Since school started the little
brass knocker on the door in one
of the back wings has caused'
much speculation. I must confess
that my curiosity also was
aroused to see Dean Clotworthy
in home surroundings of her own
taste and choice.

Haven of Quiet
As I stepped through the door

that such a haven of peace and
quiet existed in the midst of The
Sims Hubub! My first impres
sion was that of the dignity of
the room. The traditional mood
followed throughout the apart
ment is quite a contrast to the
modern decor of the rest of the
dormitory. Mr. Jack Scoville, an
interior decorator, I later discov
ered, was the coordinator, but the
choice of colors, furniture, and
fabrics was Miss Clotworthy's
alone.

The guest room, connected by
a bath, is a deeper shade of the
same green as the living room
and carpeted alike also.
The high four poster twin beds
are covered with sand-beige

is used as a den as well, a large

Kitchen
The yellow kitchen, a bright,
cheerful room, is completely
modern with stove; refrigerator,
and yellow breakfast suite. The
