Campipus Tony Torre and his 18-pl es band will play next Friday night for the annual eampus-wide Christmas dance, sponsored by the Student Union Committee, The dance will be held from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. in the Russell House cafeteria. Late permission has been granted to University coeds by Dean Clotworthy. Known as "that dynamic drum mer man," Tony Torre has been a bandleader in Columbia for sev eral years. The featured vocalist will be Bob Messina. The dance will be free of charge to all students and their dates. Carl M. Reynolds, chair man of the Student Union Com mittee, announced that the dance is "Student Union's way of wish ing the student body a Merry Christmas." Door Prizes Student Union said that door prizes will be given during the first intermission. The prizes, for a man and a woman, are being given by Lourie's, Columbia clothing store. The Slater System, again this year, is lending its full support to the Student Union Committee and is providing free refresh ments for those 'persons attend ing the Christmas Dance. The Student Union sub-com mittee in charge of the dance is composed of Sinclair Lewis, Mel vin Stepp, and Carol Watson. Decorations for the dance, which comes under the supervision of Jim Pendarvis and LeVaun Fox, will be arranged primarily by the McBride Brotherhood, and by the Hypatian Literary Society. WUSC To Present Series WUSC, the campus radio sta tion, will present a series of dra matic science-fiction stories start ing Dec. 11, John Hourihan, WUSC program manager, has announced. The series, entitled "Destination Unknown" will fea ture scripts adapted from science fiction stories. The first program in the series is "Backlash." It deals with a group of visitors from space known as the Ollies and their robot slaves. When an executive for a home appliance firm tries to place the robots on the market as domestic servants, surprising developments take place. Featured in the cast of "Back lash" are Bond Thomas, Johanna Jackson, Harry Herman, David Bledsoe, Russell Burns, and Gene 1 Longmire. John Hourihan Is the 1 producer with Pat Patterson chief engineer and sound effects by Bill Goforth and John Gru nert.4 The 30-minute drama will be < broadcast Wed., Dec. 11 at 8:30. BOOK REVIEW Salinger f For those readers who some times tire of the shopworn saga of the rosy-cheeked, smiling young man setting forth to "find his place in the world," here is a rather different treatment of the adjustment of youth to reality theme from the pen of J. D. Sal inger. In this novel, the smile is replaced by a synical sneer, and ambitious anticipation by an aw what-the-hell bitterness. CATCHER IN THE RYE is not a new book, but due to a re cent re-printing in a convenient and economical edition (Signet, 35c), it seems to deserve a fur ther comment. The story concerns one Holden Caulfield, a disil lusioned 16-year-old boy who has just been expelled from private school for the fourth time. He is an individualist who cannot chan nel or control his individualism or his disgust for the sham and hypocrisy around him. As an out ward sign of non-conformity, he buys a red deer-hunting cap and wears it reversed, with the long bill pointing -down the back of his neck. This he wears with the standard tweed topcoat, scarf, and gloves. *Leaves Sehool He decides to leave school be fore his parents, who live in near by New York City, are informed >f his dismissal. It occurs to him ~o spend a few days in the city, aut not to go home to his parents mnd their complete lack of un lerstanding toward him. He ar -ives at this decision in the mid. lIe of the night and immediately atches a train for New York. Finally, at the end of his financial resources, he returns to his home at the urging of his younger sister, of whom he is quite fond, and the book ends ironically with an allusion to the fact that his family has decided that a psychonanalyst would be "just the thing" to straighten him out. This is an unbeautiful book. It deals with a person who is per ceptive enough to see useless con vention stifling the individuality of everyone with whom it comes in contact, and who is intelligent enough to resent being fitted to a mould. He lashes out indiscrim inately at everyone and every- . thing he encounters, confusing his analytical faculties with sub jective impressions and driving himself further and further from the very thing he seeks-his own self-expression as a separate en tity. Colloquialism After reading the first few pages of the novel, it was appar ent to this reviewver that a stamp of unqualified approval should be awarded for the extremely ef fective use of colloquial language. This is the most realistic area of the book in that the story Is couched in a language that a per son of Hiolden's type probably wvould use. It is conceivable that in this language lies the great est strength of the book. Its weaknesses are fully as ap parent. Holden is not a believable character. He can never be fully accepted as a human being. He is only a series of events massed under one interesting but undis criminating heading. He Is an idealistic adding machine which always conmes up with the same total--disgust and rejection. Un fortunately, since the answers always turn out negative, most of them are inaccurate. How ever, the book is not a commen S ITICHES IT 'uS 0., INC. Pi Phi's To' fdld Dance Pi Beta Phi social sorority wil hold its bi-annual Christmas Ar row Ball in the Jefferson Rote Ballroom next Thursday wher the Pi Phi's and their dates wil dance to the music of Tony Torr and his band. OPERA AT EMORY The Emory opera group plani to present two comedies; "Im. pressario," Mozart's lighthearted spoof of Italian opera, and Mar. tinu's "Comedy on Bridge." -The Emory Wheel Character tary on Holden's morality, so the mistakes are allowed to stand. There is too great a similarity between this boy and the Greek tragic hero. This intended like ness falls far short of its appar ent goal in that Holden is def initely not the heroic type. He is a weak and unguided force. He wanders through these many epi sodes with no apparent purpose other than to knock the "system." Interesting In spite of its obvious failings, the work does succeed in evoking a certain amount of interest for the reader. It sounds chords of recognition -in our own memories. We find ourselves partially mir rored in the uental meanderings of this rather confused individ ual. Everyone goes through some sort of growing pains, and in evitably must face a few of these same situations. However, real izing that Holden is a combina tion camera and tape recorder denies him any of the sympathy which we might ordinarily feel for him. In all, the book leaves nothing in particular to think about, only a few impressions and perhaps a vague stirring of some sort of recollection where we glimpse a familiar face.
