Battle To Be
ACC Highlight
The game tomorrow between
.lemson and Duke shapes up to be
me of the more interesting games
n the nation if statistics mean
Lnything, according to latest fig
ires released by the Atlantic Coast
'onference Service Bureau.
Clemson is currently leading the
onference in total offense with.
09.7 yards per game and Duke is
lose behind with 299.6 yards a
ame.
In the rushing offense depart
nent, Duke is leading with 247.9
'ards gained per game while
'lemson's Tigers are second at
37 yards.
Clemson is second in the league
n passing and Duke is fifth. Duke
s tops in total defense, having
flowed only 213.6 yards per game
o their opponents, while Clemson
s third in this phase of the con
erence game.
Many experts feel a bowl bid
nay hinge on the outcome of the
ame between Clemson and Duke.
)uke has tied one game within
he conference, while Clemson has

s Attack
s, still looking for their first
, left this morning for Char
iill encounter the running of
ig of Nelson Yarbrough and
rnoon.
The Birds, who won three of
their first four games, only to
lose the next three conference
battles to Clemson, North Caro
lina and Maryland, will go into
the game a slight underdog accord
ing to some sportswriters who
think the running and passing of
the Cavaliers will be too much
for the Gamecocks.
The Cavaliers, coached 'by Ben
Martin, have been considered an
up and down team this year on the
basis of their won-lost record. In
the initial game of the season,
the Virginians held West Virginia
to a 6-6 tie, then lost to Duke's
Blue Devils before beating Wake
Forest. Clemson's ever improving
Tigers downed Martin's crew and
the Cavaliers bounced back to
trounce Virginia Tech. In an inter
sectional game with Army's Black
Knights, the soldiers barely man
aged to eke out a victory in the
closing minutes of the game. Two
weeks ago VMI downed the
Cavaliers.
At the beginning of the season,
Coach Martin said the 1957
Cavaliers would be an improved
ball club and apparently his fore
cast is correct. Last season the
Virginians had a 3-7 record. Caro
lina downed Virginia, 27-13, in the
annual "Tobacco Bowl" at Rich
mond.
Virginia has based their success
on the running of Jim Bakhtiar.
the Iranian fullback who appears
well on his way to a rushing record
for the conference. At the present
time Bakhtiar has gained 676
yards in 150 plays to lead the
ACC in the total offense category.
The remarkable thing about this
is that all the yardage has been
,ained on the ground. Bakhtiar
did throw one pass this season,
but it was to a ineligible receiver,
thus the pass did not go into the
record books.
The other bright spot in the
Virginia offense is the passing of
Reece Whitley and Nelson Yar
b)rough. Whitley is leading the
ronference in passing with 821
yards gained on 25 completions.
Yarbrough is third in this depart
ment following Whitley and
Harvey White of Clemson. The
Florida senior has completed 23
of 51 passes for 219 yards.
Naturally Virginia is leading
the league in passing with 609
yards gained through the air in
~even games. On the other hand,
South Carolina is last in the pa
lefense category.
The Gamecocks, who lost to
North Carolina and Jim Tatum
[ast Saturday, came out of the
game with the usual minor bruises
mnd injuries. Frank Destino was
aot able to practice at the begin
ing of the week because of minor
ruises, but is expected to be ready
~or the game tomorrow. King
Dixon injured his knee in the Tar
-eel game and there was no indi
ration at press time as to the
;eriousness of the injury.
The ACC battle will be the 16th
n a series which began in 1912.
/irginia has won eight of the
rames and South Carolina has
even victories over the Cavaliers.
