Two Receive Journalism Scholarships Cathy Bryan of Sumter and Jin Hoagand of Rock Hill have beer named winners of two scholarships for freshman journalism majors which are awarded each year by the South Carolina Press Associa tion. They were selected fron more than 20 applicants. Miss Bryan began her career it junior high where she was a col. umnist and feature writer fot The Biddy. She was on the staf: of the Sumter High News for fou1 years, and for the last two yeari has had her own column. Column Winners In her senior year she wa: awarded first place trophy in th( column division by the South Car. olina Scholastic Press Association She also had bi-weekly column ir The Sumter Daily Item about new! and happenings in the high school She has also held several clast offices in her school. She was th( junior class president and seniot class president, and was also th( secretary-treasurer of the studeni body. She was a cheerleader, a member of the National Honor So. ciety, and a member of the Latir Club. She is also a member of Quill and Scroll. Former Sports Editor Iloagand was the sports editoi of Garnet and Black, the Rock Hil high school newspaper, in hit senior year after being assistani sports editor the previous year He was a reporter, feature write and columnist. He won secon< place for a sports column in thi SCP4k individual contest in hi: senior year. He also won hi school's Voice of Democracy con test. Iloagand was graduated In th( top ten per cent of his class, was a member of the Beta Club, th( Key Club, and the National Honoi Society. lie is a member of Quill and Scroll. In 63 years, the Gamecocks have won 250 games, lost 237 and have tied 31. During this time, the Birds have scored 6,409 points as compared to 6,195 for the oppon ents. By NOR!
