Two Receive Journalism Scholarships Cathy Bryan of Sumter and Jin Hoagand of Rock Hill have bee named winners of two scholarships for freshman journalism majori which are awarded each year by the South Carolina Press Associa. tion. They were selected fron more than 20 applicants. Miss Bryan began her career ir junior high where she was a col umnist and feature writer foi 'l'he Biddy. She was on the staf of the Sumter High News for fou: years, and for the last two years has had her own column. Column Winners In her senior year she was awarded first place trophy in the column division by the South Car olina Scholastic Press Association She also had bi-weekly column ir The Sumter Daily Item about new: and happenings in the high school. She has also held several class offices in her school. She was the junior class president and senior class president, and was also the secretary-treasurer of the student body. She was a cheerleader, a member of the National Honor So ciety, and a member of the Latir Club. She is also a member of Quill and Scroll. Former Sports Editor Hoagand was the sports editoi of Garnet and Black, the Rock Hil high school newspaper, in hii senior year after being assistani sports editor the previous year He was a reporter, feature writei and columnist. He won second place for a sports column in the SCPA individual contest in his senior year. He also won his school's Voice of Democracy con. test. Iloagand was graduated in the top ten per cent of his class, was a member of the Beta Club, the Key Club, and the National Honor Society. He is a member of Quill and Scroll. In 63 years, the Gamecocks have won 250 games, lost 237 and have tied 31. During this time, the Birds have scored 6,409 points as compared to 6,195 for the oppon ents. A series of eight films entitled "How To Look At Modern Art," has been obtained. The films .re to be shown each Monday morning at 8 a.m. and will last about 50 minutes.
