Band I
Band Director Pat Garnett is
already at work shaping the Uni
versity band into a marching unit
to perform at the Carolina-Duke
football game.
Band members were among the
first to return to the University
this fall with the percussion sec
tion arriving Sept. 2 and 3 and
other members the following day,
Since then they have been prac
ticing as many as three times
each day.
Garnett expects to have be
tween 75 and 100 members when
the band is at full strength as
a marching unit this year. The
marching band will perform
regularly throughout football sea
son and afterwards a concert band
will be formed. The marching
band will be used during the year
when the occasion arises.
Pre-Season Drill
Garnett said that this year is
the first time that a pre-season
training period has been installed
and although the band will be
playing at the first football game,
the doors are not closed and he
welcomes anyone else who is in
terested in playing in the Uni
versity band.
Part of the band has already

held earlier this week.
A veteran of some 25 years ex
perience as a band director in
South Carolina, Garnett hopes to
eventually have a marching band
of 150 students.
The director and his assistant,
John Canfield, along with several
student assistants are engaged in
the task of ordering music, teach
ing new students basic drill, pre
paring music folders for the band
members and numerous other jobs
necessary in the organization of
at marching band.
Drum Major Named
This year's drum major is Coel
Dunlap. Harry Orr is band presi
lent and Eddie Rouffy is vice
president.
Only four or five members of
last year's band graduated. Thus,
the band is now made up of vet
ran members except for a few
reshmen whom Garnett heard
play in other bands and invited
to attend the pre-season training
period.
