CaroAna Rle Raddy Gray (Pi Kappa Phi) and Sylvia Couch were married Saturday at Flint Ridge Baptist Church in Heath Springs. Other Caro lina students attending the ceremony included Richard Mims, Benny Brown, Yancey Montgomery, Pat Cave, Buddy Kennedy, Steve Irick, Jerry Ellis and Fred Sojourner. Jack Rogers (Pi Kappa Phi) and Ada Marian Hunter of Converse College were specta tors at the annual Block House Steeple chase in Tryon, N. C., Saturday. Pledges and Actives Chi Psi social fraternity re cently activated John Tate Austell and Ray Lenoid Thomas. Don Bryant and Jimmy Long, both of Greenville, have been pledged by Pi Kappa Phi. Music will be provided by Billy Knauff and his orchestra. During intermission the new "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" will be crowned by Jerry Bauknight, President of the fraternity. Awards will be presented to mem bers of the chapter for outstand ing individual achievements dur ing the past school year. Sponsors for the ball are: Catherine McClain for Jerry Bauknight, president; Lona Beck hani for Lee Maupin, vice-presi dent; Anne Brewer for Tommy Mattox, recording secretary; Jen neta Wright for Roger Knapper, corresponding secretary; Patricia Hudson for Allen H. Johnson, past pledge-trainer; Mary Alice Corbett for Ronnie Ledbetter, social chair man; and Linda Cauthen for Bill Handel, house manager. Sigma Chi fraternity was founded June 28, 1855, at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. It be came the third member of the famous Miami Triad, which con sists of Beta Theta Pi, Phi Delta Theta and Sigma Chi. The new Fraternity spread quickly over the West and South. The growth of Sigma Chi was slowed by the advent of the Civil Wr but was not stopped. In the years that followed the fraternity has grown till it is no longer a national but international fratern ity, with 127 Active Chapters and 130 Alumni Chapters located in the United States, Canada, Eng land, and the Philippine Islands. She will be presented with a bouquet of white roses, the fraternity flower, and other gifts. Chapter members will serenade her with the song, "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi." The decorations committee plan to use the fraternity colors of blue and old gold, extensively. Other dctorations will be the Fra ternity Badge and Coat of Arms. Events are scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. on the Horse shoe, and will be climaxed by the presentation of the Bronze Derby to the winning sorority. Members of the eight social sororities on the University cam pus compete in races and contests during the afternoon for points awarded on the basis of win, place and show. The holder of the larg est purse will receive the Bronze Derby from the president of Gamma Nu chapter, Sigma Chi. Highlighting the activities is the "Miss Venus" contest. Con testants will parade before the spectators and judges with their heads covered, and the winner will be chosen according to "exterior physical qualities." This woman student will be awarded a trophy and several hundred dollars worth of mer chandise from local merchants. Farley Lawton, representing Al pha Delta Pi sorority, is the pres ent holder of the "Miss Venus" title. The Sigma Chi Derby had its beginning at the University- of California in the early 30's. Since then it has spread throughout the country and is now staged by mo:e than 100 Sigma Chi chap ters. Carolina's first Derby was held in 1947. The program is patterned after the Kentucky Derby, - with indi vidual chapters planning the special events. A balloon race, tug-of-war, t h e Longchamps Special, a pie-eating contest, the mysterious "Secret Race" and the "Miss Venus" contest will be in cluded in the Carolina version this spring. New Director Miss Rhosan Dobben, national traveling seeertary for Delta Zeta social sorority, visited Beta Delta chapter at the Univ&'sity last week<. Miss Dobben selected Miss Lu cille Bowland of Columbia is to be the newv college chapter director for this chapter during her visit.
