Another spring has arrived in
Columbia bringing with it the an
nual gifts of birds, flowers and
another bill to chop six feet off
the State House grounds. Here on
the Carolina campus, it is a time
for week end trips to the, beach,
for Easter bonnets, for turning
over new leaves and old boyfriends.
The annual pie-in-the-sky of
Election Day is making room for
the pie-in-the-face of May Day.
Spring is also bringing us thi
year a fine series of concert pro
grams by local musical organiza
tions. Let us take a quick lool<
at some coming events.

bia Symphony will present a
"Pop" concert at Dreher High
Auditorium at 8 p.m., Friday,
April 12. The price for student
tickets is less than for a movie
and the seats are more comfor
table.
The orchestra already has the
cooperation and support of many
local business houses, the Colum
bia Education System, and the
American Federation of Masicians,
so let's give it our support also.
Choral Society Performs
The Columbia Choral Society
will present its second program
of the season Sunday afternoon,
April 7, at Trinity Church. The
Society, directed by Guthrie Darr,
will sing Mozart's "Requiem
Mass." The program begins at 4
p.m.
USC Band Concert
Finally, the Spring concert of
our own USC Band will be to
night in Drayton Hall. Pat Gar
nett's "Majorette-less Wonders"
will perform a program of brass
band goodies beginning at 8:15
p.m.'
The concert is being presented
through the cooperation of the
University Music Department and
the South Carolina State Legisla
ture. This may be the last chance
to hear the USC Band before it is
turned over to the State, so hurry,
hurry, hurry!

Foreign Work
Applications
Now Available
The State Department has an
nounced that the semi-annual For
eign Service Officer Examination
will be given on June 24, at more
than 65 centers throughout the
country.
Any person between the ages
of 20 and 31, as of May 1, 1957,
and an American citizen of at
least nine years standing is eligi
ble to take the examination.
After completing three months
of training at the Foreign Service
Institute in Washington, the new
officers will take up duties at one
of the 275 American Embassies,
Legations, and Consulates around
the world.
The persons who successfully
pass the one-day written examina
tion, which tests the candidate's
facility in English cxdression, gen
eral ability and background, as
well as his proficiency in a modern
foreign language, will be given
an oral examination by panels
which will meet in regional centers
of the country.
The persons who pass the oral
test will then be given a physical
examination and a security investi
gation.
Starting salaries for successful
candidates range from $4,750 to
$5,450 per year depending upon the
age, experience and family status
of the individual.
