Making a scale model of Co
lumbia's First Presbyterian Church
has been the project of chemistry
major Margaret Ann Barber since
the fall of 1954.
The model is complete from the
miniature Bible with its marker
on the pulpit and small bulletin
boards to the scaled 25-inch steeple f
and lighting system of capillary t
tubes and batteries.
"I don't think I .would do it
again," said Miss Barber, speaking
of building the model. "I didn't
know how much trouble it would
be."
The replica is about 16 inches
high and eight inches wide, situ
ated on a mahogany base. Using
balsa wood, she carved each part
separately with small knives.
Boiled Wood
"Balsa wood is light and splin
ters easily, making it difficult for
carving. Therefore, I boiled the
wood in water for a short time
and then molded it by peeling it
with a knife. After that I sanded
it a little but not enough, to make
it fuzzy," she said.
To get the exact dimensions of
the building it was necessary to
measure most of it.
, "I found the floor plan and choir
grill detail in the church vault, but
I had to measure the rest of it
with instruments," she said.
"An interesting incident occurred
while I was measuring the width
of the front stairs. A man came
by as I was down on my hands and
knees and stood watching, scratch
ing his head in puzzlement."
Exact Replica
Miss Barber's model is an exact
image of the present church, part
of which was built over 100 years
ago and the rest in 1925.
"I spent a lot of time in the
churchyard mixing the paint, but
I couldn't get the exact color. To
get the slate grey color of the
roof, I used poster paper," she
said.
The front section with the
steeple can be removed from the
model and the interior viewed.
The floor and stairs to the
small balcony are covered with
rose carpeting made of upholstery
material. The pews, 26 on each
side and 25 in the center, are one
