The names of Grady's chief comn petitors-Chet (the Jet) Forte and Wilt (the Stilt) Chamberlain-are now commonplace in the barber shop and coffeeshop talk. Until a few weeks ago, to these same people, Forte's Columbia University was commonly mistaken for a local Methodist girls' school; Chamberlain's Kansas wvas a flat country "somewhere west of Clem son College." But today Forte, Columbia U., Chamberlain and Kansas are as real as hominy grits and red-eye gravy. Although they've never seen Chet and Wilt, the fans are out to beat thenm. Not one of a recent barbershop gabfest could remember his own social security number, but all were quick with Wallace's scoring -average: "Three - ought - point - five - seven-one 1" Just as quickly they'll tell you about Forte and Chamberlain. They know that Columbia U. plays at Yale Wednesday night and Kan sas is at Oklahoma A. & M., Thurs (lay night. I need a shoe lace . . what kind of percentage did I have against Duke." James Wallace Edwards, the manager of the University basket ball team begins hearing these cries the minute he walks into the dressing room and they continue until he is the last to leave. "Cagney," as he is called by most of the campus, began his labor of love four years ago when he came to Carolina from Lyman, S. C. He is usually the first to reach the gym around 3 o'clock and the last to leave at six. Cagney says that all in all the fellows on the team make his job a rather easy chore. Not many of them have any special demands nor are they tempermental like you would expect. Official Scorer, Too During the road games, Cagney is the team's official scorer and makes sure that the team's needs at halftime are taken care of. He says that the hardest thing to do on the trips, is to "get the players out of the sack" in the early morn ing hours. When asked who he thought was the best basketball player he had seen in his four years as manager, he quickly responded, "Grady." This is Grady Wallace, his room mate and also presently the na tional scoring leader. His praises of Grady were very emphatic and laudatory. As for the best Game cock team, he said, "This years' team without a doubt." The nickname, "Cagney," was pinned on him sometimes in his freshman yeat he recounted. One can see that he has a strong resemblance to James Cagney, the movie actor. Excitement Galore The most exciting game Cagney has seen at Carolina, came during this years' campaign. It was the USC-North Carolina game played at the University field house earlier this season. North Carolina won this game in a double-over time thriller. Cagney said, "Even though we lost, it was the most exciting game I've seen. I sure thought we had them a few times." Does the managerial work hinder you in your studies? Confused With Players Cagney has been around the basketball scene for so long that sometimes even the coaches get him confused with the players. This 'year when Carolina played N. C. State in Charlotte, Coach Frank Johnson, who was excited at the half over the closeness of the ball game, said to one of the players, "Now, Coodroe, you can go in for Cagney this half." Cagney was on the court, but he was checking on the scoring of the first half. And sometimes the unknowing fans get hitn confused with the coaches because, unlike most man agers, Cagney dresses for every game in coat and tie. One of these inquiring fans asked at a recent home game, "Which coach is that, little guy?" The fellow sitting next" to him said, "Man, don't you know . . . that's Cagney." When Cagney graduates, a lot of the fans will miss seeing him "sweat it out" from his position on the end of the Carolina bench.
