GLAMOUR' NATION4L 'Queen O MUSICAL NOTES Beans, Jeaj fly Bob Grosse Music Analyst Recently, I happened to have lunch in that hotbed of mediocrity, the Russell House Canteen or "Gamecock Room." While there, besides being impressedt by the (uality of the food and service, I heard what the homo-not-so sapiens of USC is listening to these days at 10 cents a throw. It was truly educational, for example: "Young Love," Tab Hunter Motion picture idol Hunter picks a comfortable note at the begin ning of the song and sticks to it for two choruses, mea~nwhile telling of love among the pre-puberty set. Even the fact that parts of the song are borrowed from Flotow's opera "Martha" doesn't seem tc help much. Wringle Wrangle "Wringle Wrangle," Fess Parker --Seems that the Lone Ranger it tired of all that "kemo sabe' nonsense and has decided to settle down wvith "a can of beans, a new pair of jeans, and a purty woman 's love." The moral is that, after all these years, the Lone Ranger hat realized that, alas, Silver is only a horse. "Love Is Strange," Mickey & Silvia-Despite some mighty stiff S comp)etition, this ranks as the worst record of the year. Mickey & Silvia, accomnpanied by a grout TI CONTEST E Hearts' I Y. However, with perseverance an< the proper amount of sex appeal life can be beautiful. With a littl< effort, this disc could become com pletely obscure in record time. Another King Hit "Ballerina," Nat "King" Cole Someone must have pushed th< wrong button. This is a good song and was made famous about 14 years ago when the country'i favorite Monroe was Vaughn. Coli sings this in a style which makes it very easy to believe that he wai once one of our leading jazz enter ta iners.* "Mary Ann," The Four Lads The Lads, taking a cue from Harra Belafonte, sing a very happy melody in the classic Calypso styl< andl endl it in time to avoid th< usual traces of monotony. This will, no doubt, be only one of long list of imitations of the Bela fonte style. The habit of commercial song writers have of copying othel peop)le's hits leads one to wonde> what might happen if someoni should revive the minuet. Powdere< wigs, anyone? Aaw a v FIVE-MINUTE RULE Restrictions Listed Restriction for those who violate the curfew by less than five minutes in any of the women's dormitories has been changed from one week to three days, according to an announcement made by 1)ean of Women Arney R. Childs. Second offenders during a semester will be restricted for one week and thereafter for two weeks. This same rule applies to those who fail to sign in, Dean Childs said. Violators who are under 20 minutes late will be restricted for one week. Second and third offenders during a semester are subject to two weeks' confine ment. This rule also applies to girls who are more than 20 minutes late, she said. A card record of all restrictions will be maintained in the office as a part of the student's permanent record, she added. There will be no lifting of restrictions for any cause except a previous engagement for a formal dance, Dean Childs said. One of the chief designs of the new regulations is to make a distinction between violators of five and 20 minutes, she explained. "While these new rules are the lightest the University has had, they are designed to make the girls interested in being on time. They are also designed to make restrictions harder on consistent offenders," she said.
