35-34 SCORE DECIDES Sims Independents Freshmen For WA. By Mac Hill Assistant Sports Editor The Sims Independents walked off with the championshi letic Association double-elimination basketball tournament undefeated Freshmen in two straight games. The once-beaten Independents pushed the tourney into Freshmen a 52-35 setback last Friday night and they the ship by squeezing past a fighting yearling sextet, 35-34, in V Sports Ganders (Contied from page 6) were attempting to get the boy to sign a grant-in-aid with their school. With all the confusion which is marked with recruiting, the boy might sign with a college on the spur of the moment (let's not kid ourselves, it's done quite often) and then along in June or July, the athlete, having thought over the matter of his future education, decides that he . should go to another school. But, he's already signed the grant-in-aid paper with one school, so pow he can't go to any other school in the conference because it is against the conference's rules and regulations. What a helluva a mess!! What's he gonna do? Everyone will just have to wait and see what is going to happen in the "baby" of the major collegiate conferences in the United States. The question will come up again at the spring meeting of the conference in May, 1957. Clemson, you' had better think this thing through before you jump off the deep end. All this goes to the so-called Big Four, too. From Atop the Fence ... Today is the day for speculation, so I'm speculatin' on a few things. First of all, as you know, Coach Johnny Sauer resigned as head coach at The Citadel this week "for personal rea sons." Well, I believe these "personal reasons" exist in the form of a big boost in pay from another college. Perhaps you know that the University of Texas is cur rently looking for a new head coach since Eddie Price re signed during the season, and Southern California is also looking for a new head man after Lynn "Pappy" Waldorf retired. Sauer was a backfield coach for the professional Los Angeles Rams before coming to The Citadel, and all the people in California appeared to like Sauer real well. The prospects, money, people, and all the other condi tions necessary to have a good football team exist in Cali fornia. So, my prediction is: Johnny Sauer will probably accept the head coaching job at Southern California if offered. Or, he might even accept the job at Texas. All this is purely my own guess, and might be wrong, but it is worth thinking about. I SPORTS MORGUE I The Gamecock, Dec. 12, 1941: Coach Frank Johnson's cagers pre pare to open their '41-'42 season.
